What a PLEASANT Surprise! 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric First Drive and Review

Hello everyone and welcome back to another EVG studio review. As always, Sebastian, I’m Joel and this is a 2025 Hyundai Kona electric seal courtesy of Crane Hyundai. Before we get started, I want to let you know Craig Henry is doing some great things right now. They’re doing some uh uh great work with Arkansas Children’s Hospital and Susan Bman. So, wanted to give them a shout out for doing some great things with those two organizations. Sebastian Con electric not a car we have talked a lot about you know on our channel on our podcast. So tell everyone a little bit about this one. Yeah. So part of the reason we’ve not done a lot with it is until very recently we never had them in Arkansas. Y Hyundai was weirdly specific about what regions they would ship these to. And Arkansas for the longest time was not in that list. That’s changed semi-reently and our dealership has started ordering and getting in some of these. And really on paper for a basic EV, this makes checks a lot of boxes. Yeah. You know, this one seal trim, so it’s the mid-trim level. Has the bigger battery pack. It’s a 64.8 kilowatt hour battery pack. 261 miles range, EPA tested. Um, sticker price, 38 grand. 38 grand with incentives with incentives right now that Hyundai’s offering. So, it doesn’t qualify for federal tax credit, which soon we won’t have to say. Actually, by the time this video comes out, this might not be necessary. Yep. But Hyundai is doing incentives like there’s a $7,500 finance bonus cash on it, which will put it at 31 grand, which is a good deal on it. And so what I’m going to be sitting here thinking about the whole time we’re looking at this is you could wait for the new Chevy Bolt. Yep. Or cuz we sim we think specs I would expect to be charging speeds are going to be similar. Wow. Someone showing off their car up there. Um anyway, 64.8 kilowatt hour battery pack, 261 miles of range, a close to 100 kilowatt peak DC fast charge speed. I think you said 10 to 80, 43 minutes, 43 to 45, which is pretty much spot on to like an Equinox or a Blazer. Yep. And so I would expect it to be pretty similar. Yep. Wow. I’d expect it to be pretty similar to the new Bolt whenever they do announce it. Seems like that’ll be somewhat similar to like the new Leaf and a couple other cars. So yeah, I’m just super interested to see what this is about. This is kind of originally the Kona was Hyundai’s EV that was mainly a compliance car. So not on the EGMP platform, not EGMP, just its own thing. It’s shared with the Nero EV. Both of these cars were they originally were mainly just compliance cars. Yep. So they’re because of California emissions regulations, but they’ve stuck around. They’ve kept them around. They’ve iterated, you know, this is a second generation vehicle. Yep. And yeah, I’m just excited to check it out, see what it’s all about. All right. Like uh like always, we’ll do a quick walk around, interior review, driver review, and then give you our final thoughts. So stay tuned. All [Music] right, like always, Sebastian, give us a tour of this 2025 Kona Electric. Yeah, let’s start up front. Not something we usually get to say. Nope. So, you’ve got this split headlight design. It has a full light bar all the way across the front end, which is interesting. You notice uh pixels, of course, they’ve started expanding that beyond the ionic line. You see that a lot in the new Santa Fe, too? Yep. You have your charge port up here on the front. Oh, it locks with the car. Nice. Pop open manual door. You’ve got in here your J1772 port with your CCS. I believe these can charge on Tesla superchargers like other Hyundai vehicles. And because the ports on the front, it might actually be able to do it without taking up too. A little better. Yep. Coming around, let’s look at the side. You’ve got these little bitty wheels. You see these are 17in wheels. They kind of have an arrow flower star design to them on some just basic allseason tires. Yep. Nothing crazy. Pretty easy. You’ve got proximity entry front doors. So, it’s locked, unlocked, not on the rear doors, but this is a compact SUV. That’s fairly standard, fairly normal. You want to take a quick peek at this window sticker with me. So, here you’ll see 261 mi of range. There’s that price after freight and handling 39165. This is manufactured in Korea. Uh, US Canadian parts content zero. China 50% Korea 45% dagum. This does however have all the Hyundai safety stuff. It’s got the adaptive cruise blind spot monitor, lane key, the new CCNC. New CNC. We’ll talk about that later. Come around the back. You’ll see again you’ve got this like split tail light design. Full light bar all the way across. No pixels. They do make a Kona and a Kona electric, correct? Yeah. Yeah. So, this is the electric. You can tell because it says electric at the bottom. Electric rear window wiper. Always love seeing those. The seal does not have a power trunk. However, it’s got a pretty big nice size trunk. It’s got a good size trunk. This one has the cargo cover. I’m indifferent on those. You can fold the seats down. All that normal stuff. Do we look underneath? I have not looked underneath. Oh, that’s pretty decent. Yep. You can tell that there would maybe be a spare tire. Assuming it’s the same if it’s the gas. Yes. though. Um, and I wonder if the up level sub uh sound system if that’s where the subwoofer is. Yep. Anyway, this does have the strongest gas struts in the world on the trunk. Work out them forearms. Putting that down. Come around the back. I’m going to unlock it with the uh wonderful Hyundai key that Sebastian always that looks like an H and has no weight to it and for somehow doesn’t have a space for the physical key. Yep. Anyway, pop it open. Joel, let’s take a look at that back seat. All right. So, I was in here earlier and actually had plenty of room to sit. So, plenty of headroom as you can see. You can’t see, but it’s okay. Oh, there’s plenty of headroom. So, you got two vents back here. Looks like you have two USBC’s. Also, another little compartment down here to throw some change or some other stuff. Any USB ports or anything back there? Yeah, two USBC’s. Okay, you just said it. I’m so sorry. Yep, that’s fine. And then, uh, yeah, plenty of room. Feels comfortable. This is light beige cloth seats. Yep. They call it gray, I think, on the sticker. So, yeah. But yeah, I mean comfortable. I mean, it’s that’s not a bad little back seat back here. This looks a little all single tone. Yep. It looks a little cheap, but it’s not supposed to be an expensive car. Yep. I mean, $40,000, but you know what I mean. Yep. One other thing to look at. Front trunk. Front trunk. So, this what what’s one thing we were actually kind of shocked about cuz be similar that hold the same characteristics as the gas powered Kona. Yeah. which this is frontwheel drive. Yep. Which the gas powered Kona is also frontwheel drive. Not that there’s powertrain similarity between the two, but just for layout purposes. And you can see, I mean, there’s a bunch of stuff going on up here. Yep. But they still found a way to put a little front gate to give you the frontal lobe. Yep. I think it might be bigger than the one in the 5. It’s bigger than the one in my EV6. So anyway, um you do not get it looks like the world’s easiest uh air filter air filter to change, but that’s okay. Yep. I’m sure that’s Oh, it’s back. No, it’s not back there. So, but you get one anyway. And then you have all your mechanical goodies. Um, so yeah, also I believe if I remember right, this is the if for some reason you couldn’t get it to detach the DC fast charger. Emergency. That’s your emergency lash release. Yep. All right. It’s hot. Let’s go inside. Sebastian, let’s do it. All right. All right. We have cooled off and we’re now inside this 2025 Cone Electric. Uh, Sebastian, what is going on with this car? Yeah. So, this is actually a pretty interesting little layout cuz you can tell there’s some stuff in here that’s obviously shared with the gas Kona. Y um but that said, not that bad. No. So, you’ve got on the SEL trim, you get dual zone automatic climate control. Um you also get, if you look down here, heated seats. Not cold, just heated. Just heated. Yep. Which is fine. Um and you mean, yeah, you got some poverty buttons here, but that’s fine. Got your auto hole. You got your drive mode selector we’ll talk about later. Hit this. You have just a rear view camera on this one. No 360s. Looks like you don’t get parking sensors either. Yep. But that’s kind of expected on this compact crossover lineup. Um, looking down here, center console, you got these trick cup holders that spin and then you can push to get out of the way. This is now a big open space. So have this weird center console area that’s actually hollow down here. And you can even take that out and now it’s like one big pocket and a tiny and teeny teeny tiny that you can also just remove and then have that just be an even larger pocket. Interesting little design. Also not 100% sure why you can remove that. So no wireless charging on this model. No wireless charging on this model. This does support wired and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. We’ll look at that here in a sec. We’ll look at that here in a sec. Look around. You’ve got nice physical controls for your radio functions. This is the new or newer at this point. It’s not even new. Yeah. CCNC software that Hyundai and Kia use. We’ll talk about that more. You’ve got your gauge cluster, which is CCNC. Same type deal. Um, coming around steering wheel. You’ve got typical Hyundai Kia controls. You’ve got your four pixels here on the steering wheel. These don’t light up. That’s just what they’re doing for the Hyundai Hyundai because four dots is H in Morse code. Mhm. Anyway, got your radio controls, whatever. You got your regen paddles, which you can surprisingly adjust while you’re not in motion. However, like most Hyundai EVs, you’ll notice when I put it in reverse, it goes to level three. It doesn’t stay. It does not remember eye pedal when you get out either. Um, like most other Hyundai Kia stuff, which makes sense. Okay, let’s look at screen real quick. All right, so if you’ve seen any of our vehicle reviews where we’ve talked about CCNC, this will be pretty familiar to you. So, like most CCNC stuff, you come in here to the map. Oh, it’s giving me a tutorial. There we go. You can start coming in here. You want to search where you’re going, search like if I want to go to Austin, Texas. Texas. A lot of Austin’s around here. Okay. Just go to Atlanta. Sure. Atlanta, Texas. That’s probably far enough away to get make my point. Yep. It’s right before Dallas. Atlanta Street, Austin, Texas. Perfect. Just enter 100. There you go. There you go. Displaying. Oh my god. Okay route. Oh my gosh. Okay. If you don’t have Blue Link, you don’t get automatic route planning. Yep. You can come in and search stations, which will just show you what’s around you, but you don’t get actual route planning. Now, on the I was informed on the 2025 Iconic Fives, you actually get Blue Link for the life of the car for the first owner. Someone put that on there. I don’t believe that’s the case on the Konas. Oh, actually, Blue Link Plus all-inclusive connected services. There you go. So, you get it on this, too. So, if you’re the owner, you won’t ever have to worry about what I just said. So, ignore me. As long as you’re the first owner. Let me rephrase that. Um, coming back out of here. Your arm planning is fine. It’s not amazing. It’s okay. So, you do get CarPlay. If you take a look at how that looks since Joel’s got his phone plugged in. Um, you’ve got your I mean, typical responsiveness. It’s nice and snappy. Open it up. Typical CarPlay. This is what it looks like on iOS 26 if you haven’t seen it yet. I’m curious. Why do I have a Hyundai app on my phone? Because that’s how you get back to the uh Oh, okay. Gotcha. I thought it was on my phone. There you go. All right. Come in here. I mean, otherwise, typical CCNC stuff. I do want to come into the EV menu. And you can see it looks like it looks some of the other ones. You can see we are at 18% state of charge. 40 miles of range with AC on, 44 with it off. Swipe over, you’ve got your battery status, and you can tap on this. You get your charge limits. Gives you your 240 120 times as well as a It’s funny that it’s claiming it can charge faster on a 800volt charger than a 400volt charger considering this is a 400vt vehicle by about 20 minutes. 15 minutes. Yeah, that’s really interesting. Um, yeah. Weird. That’s gonna take some research, isn’t it? I’m wondering. Weird. Anyway, but yeah, this is typical Hyundai Kia stuff. Um, this Oh, looks it does V2L. There you go. Very nice. Um, coming in here, you also see in here, if I come into settings, you get battery preconditioning. There you I actually wouldn’t have expected to have it because its peak charge speed is already so low. Yep. But you have it. It doesn’t need to do it cuz it’s hot outside. Um even though the car seems to think it’s 55 for some reason. We’re going to ignore that. You get your utility mode which will let you keep like the AC and such on Yep. U without allowing the car to go into gear until the key. So someone commented on our last video. We talked about utility mode and not to use it with like pets and things like that. Why is that? Yeah. So the main thing is if you use utility mode, you want to be in the car. Yep. because you are able to tell if the AC is not running or whatever. Your pet can’t help, can’t do anything. There’s a couple reasons for this. A, the car is still on. This does nothing. Yep. So, that means the only way to lock the car would be to manually lock it. Do some weird shuffle like where you roll the window down, hit the lock button, and then auto up it and get your arm out of the way. That’s the only way to lock it. And then to unlock it, you have to use a Blue Link app, which if for some reason the app didn’t work, now your dog’s locked in the car. Also, utility mode, unlike like dog mode on the Teslas, if there was a problem with AC on a Tesla, it will spam your phone telling you, “Hey, climate’s not being cooled, whatever, go get your dog, whatever.” This won’t tell you. That’s the main thing is like, yes, it keeps the AC going, allows you to keep electronics powered up or whatever, but there’s no actual Yeah, there’s no warning or anything. It’s designed to be with the use of a human in the in the vehicle. Or just for I want to leave the AC on for something. Um, and then to get out of utility mode, you do have to turn the car off. Y and back on. Okay. Um, and they do that because if you had it in utility mode, you got out without the key. No one could drive off. Gotcha. Cuz they would have to turn the car off, turn it back on. They can’t turn it back on without the key. Gotcha. Um, not a whole lot else we want to talk about in here. There’s no ambient lighting or anything like that. This does have the full suite of Hyundai drivers assistance features. Also did one thing. Okay, I lied to you. Let’s come over here to because I didn’t realize you could do this and now I need to know if you can do it on your EV9. Is it here? I didn’t realize there are all these cluster themes. So you have like if you can take a peek over here, I don’t know if you’ll be able to see very well. You’ve got simple, modern, and classic. And then as you cycle through drive modes, which you do with this little knob, you twist it. Now we’re in normal. You’ll see they’ll change. And now they look like that. You can kind of cycle through again. Sport mode shows like little racing line type design. And same thing. And you’ve got snow mode for your front-wheel drive hatchback. Mhm. Anyway, I just didn’t realize that there were all those cluster themes. I thought it was interesting. We’ll put it back on simple. Um, not a whole lot else to talk about on this. I think at this point we should get camera set and go take it for a spin. Okie dokie. We are now hopping on the interstate here. Um, first impression, this rides similar to other Hyundai Kia EVs we’ve been in. Yeah. So, I mean, we’ve just been on City Street so far, but yeah, it seems to ride fine. It rides like a compact crossover usually would. Yep. Um, the one pedal drive tuning seems to be pretty much exactly the same as EGMP cars, for better or worse. Um, meaning it’s mostly smooth, but sometimes the transitions get a little funky. It’s got it’s got some get up and go. It’s got some decent get up and go. Yep. For it to be frontwheel drive. We’re at 17% state of charge. I don’t feel like we’re losing a lot of power. Like, it’s not. No slow by any means. I feel like this might be quicker. And maybe I’m just crazy. This might be quicker than a rear wheel drive Ionic 5. Really? Is it quicker than a bolt? Oh, it’s it it’s at least comparable to a Bolt. Yeah. I don’t know. It just Maybe I’m just crazy, but I feel like it pulls more than the rear wheel drive I 5 does. Maybe I’m crazy. Yep. So, I’ll Or maybe there’s statistics to back me up and I need to look up horse horsepower later. Road noise is fine. It’s a little loud, but at the same time, it’s a compact crossover. It makes sense. You know, I’m sure a gas cone is not exactly the quietest car either. Um, I’m going to get out. Let’s see. You see, it gives us the similar visualizations that Mayionic 5 does. Let me hit that button. We are doing HDA. Let me see what the map looks like here. Got it set to 65. It’s showing me cars in front of me. Don’t know if it’s going to show me cars beside me yet. So, it’s odd on the map how they have the big view and then the Yeah. And the little view that’s also zoomed out the same amount. That is a weird decision. I don’t remember that on there. It’s a You can swipe it. You can change it. Yeah, you can also get rid of it, I think. Oh, you can activate it. So, HDA is not a handsfree system, just by the way. I’m mainly trying to see if this is a torque or capacitive wheel. Gotcha. By the way, my car has a torque wheel. I don’t know when Hyundai switched to capacitive wheels on Vionic 5, but I kind of wish I had it. My Kia is a torque wheel as well. Okay, this is a torque wheel. Got it. I think Let me double triple check that. Okay, so it shows cars in your blind spots, but it doesn’t do like the moving boxes. Right. That’s it. It’s keeping it pretty centered in the lane and it’s not having you grab the stroke. It’s doing a good job. We just slowed down a little bit. Coming around a curve cuz we’re going around a curve. Still hasn’t told you to take the wheel yet. Well, I mean, it’s doing a good job though. in as far as like yes there’s more road noise than you probably would expect but again c compact crossover pretty common for if you think about I think Kona the gas conas are in the 20s I mean this is about what I would expect from a 20 something thousand car um that said suspension feels fine smooth it’s handling kind of these transitions well we have a car merge in front of us a car about to merge in front of us has still not asked me to put my hands on the wheel nope and we’re talking about a good minute and a half It’s been a minute. I’m just wanted to triple check that it was indeed a torque wheel, but I might have to get off the interstate before that. No, no lane. No lane changes this. Nothing like that. I actually don’t know. No lane changes. Correct. So, I’m assuming this is HDA1 and I had to touch the wheel there because it disabled the steering when it hit the turn signal. You’re kind of shocked by that, aren’t you? I want you to ask me to put my hands on the wheel. put your hands on the wheel. Has not done it yet. How long does it take your Hyundai to ask you? It depends. It depends. Um, which I mean I usually I usually have my hands on the wheel. The issue is since it’s lane centering, I’m not putting that much input in on the interstate and so my hands will be on the wheel and it’ll come up on the screen and tell me to keep my hands on the wheel and I’ll have to like give it a mine tells me to keep my hands on the wheel even when my hands are on the Yeah, that’s Yeah. And so I’ll have to like jiggle my hand a little bit to be like, “No, I’m still here.” And that’s again torque versus capacitive wheel. So, if it was a capacitive wheel, it would just know that my hand was on it and we’d be good. So, you you talked how this kind of competes with Equinox. I mean, what else in that price range? So, really, this is smaller of an Equinox. Yep. Excuse me. There we go. You’re so rude. I know. This is really smaller of an Equinox. This is more Bolt EUV size, which right now there’s not that much on the market. Um, this is like Bolt EUV. this shares platform with the Kia Nero. Um, which are they still making the Nero or not? Okay, they are good. Yep. Um, it still hasn’t asked me, but my hand will anyway. Um, I’m working on like 2 minutes now. Two and a half minutes. So, yeah. So, right now there’s not a whole lot in that price range, but if we start thinking about new Leaf is going to start at 30 grand. Yep. I think the mid-level trim, which this is a mid-level trim of a new Leaf is also around 35 36 grand. This seems better than the EX30. Better. Bigger. Bigger. Yes. Bigger than the EX30. I was like, “Exo, I think it would be still be better.” But yes, it’s also a 50 something thousand. Okay, I’m just going to have to drive. Sebast, you’re going to have to drive now. I’m sorry to tell you this, but No, I’m mainly amazed that it wouldn’t be go that long without asking. But size-wise, this is bigger than the It feels bigger than the X30. So, yes. Um, and so that’s why, you know, pricing 38 doesn’t sound awesome, especially because I mean, Model Y 37. Yep. But no more incentives. But no incentives. Yes. So, Model Y wouldn’t be 37. That’s after tax credit. Model Y would be in the 40s. Okay, that’s better. That makes that makes me feel better. I have to start thinking about the world without tax credits again. Model 3. Model 3 without tax credits would still be 42. Y um so yeah, really in this price range, there’s not that many options. You can get a base Equinox, which is bigger. Yep. But base Equinox is 35 grand. Does not have heated seats or uh doesn’t do lane centering, doesn’t do super cruise, anything like that. Oh my gosh. The entry level ID4s are low 30 or high 30, low 40s. So when you’re off, they sure are not paying any attention to what he’s doing. Um, so yeah, this really doesn’t have that much price competition that I can think of off the top of my head once you take tax credits out of the equation. No, I mean it it competes with a Bolt which is no longer being made. Yep. And a new Nissan Leaf which is not out yet. Yeah, it competes with the Nero which is competing with itself, right? So you may get the Nero a little bit cheaper. I think you know Kia are a little up cheaper than Nissan. And honestly like a 40minute DC fast char stop 1080. I know is uh not great. Yep. But as far as like if you’re only doing one or two trips a year, you could live with that pretty easily. This is not a car you would get on too. And otherwise and otherwise you use it as a commuter. This is a comfortable commuter. Yep. Um especially for this to be the mid-trim level, you know, and if you consider like yes, this one’s 38, but Yep. with incentives, it’s 31. With current incentives, which are not tax credit, those are just Hyundai incentives. 3130. And there were a couple other incentives in there which if you qualify for may get you another $1,500 $2,000 off. So now we’re talking maybe below 30 29. So yeah to get into a decent little electric car. Yep. So yeah I have come away more impressed than I expected to be considering that I knew this was initially a compliance car. Yep. All right. So we’re going to head back to uh Cran Little Rock and do our final thoughts. So see you in a bit. All right. All right, we made it back here to Crane Honey Little Rock. Huge shout out to Antonio and the crew over here for just kind of throwing those keys and telling us to have some fun today. Uh, final thoughts. I’ll start off. So, actually, I was not I was coming into this thinking I was going to be impressed by this vehicle. I was thinking we were getting a vehicle that was going to have old tech, old software, things like that because it’s the Kona electric and it’s basically just they took the gas powered car, made it electric. They really didn’t do anything crazy with it, but I am very impressed with it. I love that has the new CCNC software. Um, you know, pretty good ride quality. It was a little loud, but you know, it’s like you said, it’s just making noises over there. Sorry. Continue. Uh, it does it does make a little bit of road noise, but like you said, it’s a subcompact. It’s a lower end, and you can get into it for about with incentives for about $30,000. So, yeah, I’m pretty impressed. It’s updated in here. Um, yeah, Sebastian. Yeah. So, I mean, I kind of had the similar I knew I figured it would be fine. Mhm. I figured it would be like driving a Chevy Bolt or driving, you know, other just kind of EVs that exist for the sake of having an EV, not necessarily for the sake of being an EV type deals, you know, because it was the Kona and the Nurero were both originally compliance cars, you know, that’s why they’re based on gas cars, although the Nurero is not available as a anything. You can only get it in hybrid forms, but still. Yeah. Um, and then the electric one. But nonetheless, you know, it being based on a gas platform that they kind of forced an EV into, I was expecting it to just be fine. Yep. And it is fine. It’s fine. It was good. Yep. Like as far as like a compliance car goes, this is fine. This would be a perfect car to buy for like driving around town, commuting, going to the store, maybe making like a one-stop trip up to visit family, things like that. Um, and we and we said what it competes with. Equinox EV. We didn’t say it also competes with Toyota BZ4X. Yeah. Super Sulta. But I feel this is better than that for some reason. Yeah, I can see why you would say that. Um, you know, it doesn’t have the best charging speeds, but neither do those cars. Nope. Um, that’s that’s curious. That 800 volt, isn’t it? Yeah, it is. Yep. So, it’s saying 13% to 80% 42 minutes. Anyway, um, but yeah, like those cars have similar range. Those are bigger than this. Yep. Um, I don’t know that they’re any nicer on the inside, though. Um, and this is cheaper. It is. So, yeah, I’m pretty those cars. Yeah. I don’t I Well, we haven’t driven a BZ4. We have driven a Subaru Sultterra, which should be the same. Which should be the same. Yep. Just different badges, different logos. Yeah, I came away from this a lot more impressed than I thought it would. I appreciate having all these physical controls for stuff like your climate controls and your radio and HDA did a remarkable job on the I was shocked about that. You went a good three or four minutes before it asked you to take that steering wheel. Yeah. Which I mean that was only trying to test but like even without me actively putting input. It was keeping sitting in the lane. It wasn’t ping ponging. It wasn’t like herking jerking around cuz I have a 2023 Ionic 5 that occasionally when I’m doing lane sitting it feels like it’s just herkyjerky through the lane. Like it’s not ping ponging. It just can’t figure out what line it wants to follow. Yep. And I think on that last drive it said efficiency was what? 3.3 something like that. Yeah. So, not bad. Which is fine. I mean this and honestly I think Ka if I remember right it’s supposed to be magically efficient. Yep. Some of that’s probably just cuz we were sitting here with the AC on. Yep. Um not driving cuz I hear from what I if I remember correctly at least the original Konas 5 miles per kilowatt hour wasn’t hard to achieve. Yep. Um and you get that out of your bolt a lot, don’t you? I get that out of the bolt a lot. Yeah. Um anyway, but yeah, and the radio’s fine. Radio sounds This one’s fine. It’s not like anything amazing. It’s not going to blow you off of water. It’s not like a cyber truck or anything like that. It’s not like a cyber truck. Yeah, that’s that’s amazing. Yep. It is usable. It serves its purpose. Yes. All right.
