EV Sales in Australia Break Records in September – Tesla & BYD Up Over 150%

Tesla Model Y sales increased by 168% here in Australia in September. Amazing result. That means it means that it was the third bestselling car in the country. Bed sales increased by 178% in Australia. And EV sales in Australia broke new records by a significant margin. The numbers do not reflect the true story though. The true story is interesting because it’s actually better for electric cars than what it would appear. I’m going to point out why that is. But anyway, let’s have a look at EV sales here in Australia. What what is going on? Toyota said this wouldn’t happen. Toyota said that no, no, no, EV sales would never become mainstream in Australia. They said that about 10 days ago. They might start to realize very soon that that is unlikely to play out the way they wanted to. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. Tesla Model Y sales boomed in September and so did Bu sales. Compared to the same month last year, Tesla is killing it. Well, as of the last month, it was Tesla’s killing it. And because of that, Tesla was the had the third bestselling car here in Australia with nearly 4,000 deliveries. In total year to date, Tesla has sold 17,240 Model Y’s. And that’s an increase of 3.2% on the same period last year. a lot of doom and gloom from the Australian media saying Tesla sales are collapsing in Australia. Yeah, it wasn’t true. Um, it was actually just made up to get you to click. The Model 3 sales though, not so much, but for good reason. The new Model 3 was announced today. I think a lot of people probably knew that was happening. Our Model 3 sales 736, down 36%. But as I said, new Model 3, longest range Tesla in history, revealed for sale here in Australia for a very, very affordable price. which is about just under $40,000 or $61,900 for $750 km of range. In fact, the Model 3 Performance has also been upgraded as of today and so has the Model 3 all-wheel drive, which is no longer for sale in Australia, but it is in other markets. But here’s the even better news than just Tesla sales, right? 11.3% of all cars sold in Australia were electric. And in fact, that number’s a little bit higher because Xpang is not in that figure. To give you guys some context here, you’re probably thinking, “Oh, who cares? I mean, Xpang numbers mustn’t be that big.” Well, actually, I think Xpang have sold nearly 1,500 cars in Australia. I think they should report them because that’s a good number. So, anyway, a total of 12,76 EVs were sold with Tesla and BYD accounting for a huge percentage of those 7,800. Nearly about 65% of EV sales in Australia were from BYD and Tesla. But it’s worth pointing out though, Zika have pre-sold 3,000 of the 7X and their deliveries begin next month in October. So even though these numbers are really good, I think it’s sort of um well, for one, the Zika 7X numbers 3,000 deliveries, you could sometimes come manufacturers count them in sales, which they shouldn’t, but they sometimes count pre-orders in sales. But it will make October, I think, an even better month and probably November as well, an even better month than September. Plus, we didn’t account for Xpang in these numbers. So, Xpang pushes the number higher. Plus, we haven’t accounted for the new Model 3 and we haven’t accounted for sales of the new Model 3 performance, which actually people have ordered them, but they don’t get delivery until December this year. Part of this sales success, it’s sort of tied into Tesla’s recent success. They delivered 497,000 cars worldwide over the last 3 months, which was their best 3 months ever. But a bigger reason than that, I think, is new models. Zika, Depot, uh, Xpank, new brands selling EVs here in the country. And of course, also BD offering so many models. We also found out BD are going to be selling, I think, four new models starting at the end of this year and January next year. Four new models. They’re going to have an enormous lineup in Australia. How many electric cars have been sold in Australia this year? Well, 2025 76,443 versus 69,960 last year. Yeah, we’ve beaten last year by 10%. Compared to the rest of the world where EV sales have risen by nearly 30%, we’re a little bit behind. Yeah, let’s have a look at the actual bestselling cars. Let’s look at the top 20. Or actually, guys, let’s just look at the top 10 first. Model Y 3,927 in first place. Body Cineone 7 1,887. Build sales worldwide have gone down by 5% in the last month, but um Bu’s electric car sales have gone up significantly. They’re up by nearly 30%, but their plug-in hybrid sales are down by nearly 30%. So people are moving away from build plug-in hybrids and buying a lot more of their EVs. And that’s not just China. That’s globally as well. Those numbers, those that shift in consumer choice from build plug-in hybrids away from them and to build these electric cars is reflected globally in the markets outside of Australia, outside of China and in China as well. Seine 7 second place, Tesla Model 3, 736 deliveries. Bib Dolphin in fourth, 523, Bid Seal 450. Kia EV5 307, Bidi Ato3 288, Julie EX5 279, Kia EV3 241, MGS5 203, and the Volkswagen ID4 177. Polestar I believe came next with 151 registrations of the new Pstar 4, which is a very, very nice car, I have to say. And interestingly, guys, this now means there’s now more than 100 different electric car models you can buy in Australia. More than 100. That number is not going to get smaller. It’s going to get bigger. There’s also 50 plug-in hybrids. Let’s have a quick look at the well the winners in EV sales in Australia this year. Tesla’s in first place with 22,653 deliveries. Build is in second with 17,000. Kia’s in third with 65,000. MG 4840. BMW 3,971. Gile 315. Mercedes-Benz 2500. Pstar 1,867. Volvo 1,767 and Volkswagen with 148. Is very possible that Zika could surpass Volkswagen, jump past possibly even Volvo this year after they got 3,000 pre-orders for the new 7X. They might jump up this this chart up to potentially maybe up to sort of polestar numbers by the end of this year as long as they can deliver enough cars. So guys, those are EV sales in Australia this year. Good numbers, really good. We’re trending upwards. This trend is going to continue. It’s positive and I for one am excited to see this increase in numbers. What are your thoughts? Thanks for watching. The Sydney EV International Motor Show.
