2026 Geely Starray EM-i launch review: Less is more for this hybrid

The Chinese SUV onslaught might seem overwhelming, but rest assured, not all brands are taking a more is better approach to their lineup. This is the J Starray EMI, just the second model to launch from the brand after its first, the all electric EX5. We drove that back in February, and we thought it was a pretty good thing. Let’s see if J’s bagged itself another winner with the Star Ray. Featuring the brand’s EMI plug-in hybrid tech, pairing a 1.5 L petrol engine with an 18.4 4 kWh battery pack. It’s good for a total claimed driving range of 943 km, up to 83 of those on electric power alone. Even at its budget price, the SAR gets a decent host of kit thrown its way with electrically adjustable heated front seats and an assortment of screens as standard with a topsp spec variant adding a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger, and seat ventilation. Additionally, the greatest benefit of J taking its time between models might not just be about bringing the right ones here, but ensuring they have the right level of support when they do arrive. Between launches of the EX5 and Starray, J has grown its showroom network from 22 to 46, now employing more than 100 technicians nationally. Modest numbers in the grand scheme of things, but a showing of commitment to the Australian market. Also throwing its hat into the ongoing Chinese plug-in hybrid price walls, J has equipped the Star with a lean sticker price starting from just 37,490 before onroads for the entry- level complete and $3990 for the flagship Inspire. Another day, another electrified Chinese SUV in our market. Would J’s patience to bring the Star here spell it success? Head over to the Open Road website for our full ride

Taking a ‘less is more’ approach to its line-up, the Geely Starray EM-i is only the brand’s second model, packing plug-in hybrid tech and a lean price. ️
