How Frying Oil Could Bring Cheap Chinese Electric Cars to Canada
It appears that there’s a good chance Canada will get cheap, well, not just cheap, but really good. Chinese electric cars very soon, and you guys in the United States will be missing out. Here’s why it’s likely to happen. Hello, my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. Great to have you with us. What’s happening here is this. Canada looks like it’s likely to sign a deal, well to sign a deal soon with the Chinese government to cancel the 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. And while of course you can imagine that I’m sure there’s many people in Canada that are interested in a new Zika or an Xpang or a BYD electric car, Elite Motor as well. There’s so many different options and so many different choices you guys could have. Particularly because your cars are lefthand drive, which is the Chinese car market’s left-hand drive. They don’t really need to make any changes to just ship them straight over to Canada. And there’s so many good electric cars now that you can buy in China. They’re so much more affordable than what Canadians can get right now. So, here here’s the news, right? Uh the National Post confirmed this with Canada’s National Finance Minister. Officials are currently undertaking work on this review, including an assessment of China’s policies and trade practices and whether the scope of the sir taxes as well as the t sir tax rate remain appropriate. In other words, they’re going to change the tariff on Chinese EVs. They may not change it, you know, to 0%, it might be 20%. But either way, this does give uh basically Canadians a lot more choice. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. There’s 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. Canada’s National Finance Minister said they are definitely considering, very strongly considering changing this policy. Canada currently has a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs, 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminium. Um, and those regulations were put into place last October. Similar tariffs came well implemented by US President Joe Biden. I was about to say Chinese Biden. I don’t know why, but anyway, Joe Biden. And I think um that they went too far with this. I think where they went too far with the tariffs they’re putting on Chinese electric cars and just completely banning them because it’s it’s just a bit too extreme. I think that um you know it’s sort of like we’re afraid of you so we’ll ban you. Anyway, Canada does have an automotive industry to protect. That’s part of the problem here for Canada. About 10% of Canada’s exports consists of cars, trucks, and the parts and accessories for those vehicles. Even they even export batteries as well. And the auto industry is heavily tied well Canada’s auto automotive industry is very strongly linked to the United States’s automotive industry which of course is you know a lot of the US car industry is now in Detroit but there’s actually a lot now that’s not in Detroit because of new companies like Riven and Lucid and Tesla and also other new battery factories and things that have popped up in many places in the United States. But here’s the thing, Detroit is right on the border of Canada. So there’s a lot of trade that kind of goes on between those two locations. Canada followed the US lead with tariffs, probably under pressure from the United States, recognizing that our two countries historically tied together by the close trade and culture relationships across the longest border on earth should be on the same page about an industry that is shared and important to each of us, said Canada. So you can see why um Canada did this, right? But as a result of the US and Canada now having a pretty frosty relationship, this may change. There’s Canada’s probably thinking, well, Trump is just kind of, to be honest, he’s um he’s a firecracker. He just does whatever he wants. What’s the purpose in appeasing the government at this point in time? We’re not getting anything out of it. Put it that way. Since then, as a result, Canada is just, you know, reassessing whether or not they actually want to uh continue to ban Chinese electric cars. Now, here’s the thing. Um, apparently the USC Canada relationship, it’s gone bad, but China struck a well, a deal with Canada. In response to Canada’s tariffs on EVs, China announced it would impose huge tariffs on canola oil. To be honest, canola oil is rubbish. Don’t consume it if you don’t have to. It’s a seed oil. I highly recommend not consuming seed oils at all. I try to avoid them if possible. I think they’re the worst thing in the world for you. But anyway, canola is a huge export product for Canada. So, can China obviously realize this this right? Oh, okay. What what what is what is Canada sending to us? canola oil, lots of it. Let’s put a huge tariff on that and then it’s kind of a way to say, “Okay, well, if you want to do that to us, we’ll do this back to you.” Canada is actually the world’s top producer of canola ahead of China. You need a lot of land for that for canola and the right situ right conditions and Canada has that. China is the world’s top consumer of canola. Uh though the United States is Canada’s largest buyer in total of canola. So, China’s move removes a big market, says electric for Canadian farmers and disrupts the global canola market significantly. It’s estimated this has cost Western Canadian farmers a billion dollars in the last year. So, this is a big pain point and farmers obviously saying to the government, this has to change cuz we are getting screwed here. That’s a lot of money. So, Western Canada is where the canola is grown and these provinces, they are angry about the tariffs. They are trying to say to the government, well, fix this. You created a problem, you fix it. So, the right-wing premers of the locations where these farms are, Saskatchewan and Alberta, have recently demanded that the Canadian government remove tariffs on Chinese EVs in order to fix the problem. meaning China will then remove the tariffs on canola oil and everything will go back to normal. Everything will be fine. Now, the world doesn’t work that way because obviously if Canada did completely remove tariffs, if there was 0% tariff, uh I’m pretty sure China would take over a significant portion of can Canada’s automotive industry within a short period of time. So, it’s a pretty tricky situation for the Cana Can Canadian government here. Basically, the these locations where the farmers are, they are right-wing and their right-wing constituents are protesting now against these tariffs on Chinese EVs. They’re saying, um, basically cancel those tariffs, bring the cars in, and then we can solve this problem. But you can imagine that normally these people in these farming towns would probably be against you would think they’d likely be more against Chinese products coming in in line with more right-wing policies in general, but um they’re not. They’re obviously like, well, hey, it’s a free market. Let it be free. And that’s the point they’re trying to make. Now, what do you guys think? Personally, I think um maybe Canada could just say, “All right, let’s put it on a 15% tariff, something like that.” And that would mean that Chinese EV manufacturers, they can still come to the market, they can play, but you know, Canada still gets a bit of a cut from it and they can put that 15% tariff, take that money, the 15% and give that straight to the automotive industry. just dump it straight to the automotive industry in Canada and that might be a way to kind of offset uh the potential challenge of those Chinese EV manufacturers if you can’t compete with, you know, China if and you’ve gotten the advantage of not having to ship your cars halfway across the world. Yeah. So, I’m talking about Canada’s automotive industry. They don’t have to ship anything anywhere. They’re already in Canada. And if you give them that advantage of not having to ship anything halfway across the world, plus having a 15% advantage, that you’d think would be enough for them to give them the opportunity to compete if they want to. They don’t want to. They want to keep making internal combustion vehicles, whatever. So, so be it. That might be an alternative. What do you guys think? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for watching. Bye-bye. [Music]
How Frying Oil Could Bring Cheap Chinese Electric Cars to Canada
Chinese automakers are exploring biodiesel-based shipping solutions, using waste frying oil to cut transport costs and carbon emissions. This unconventional approach could make it cheaper to export budget-friendly EVs to Canada, giving Chinese brands a sharper edge in North America’s competitive electric vehicle market.
