Real-World Test: Diesel vs Hybrid Utes, Surprising Results! (Highway & Urban Driving)

Back-to-back comparison on the same routes of two Ford Ranger pick-ups: one with the diesel V6 and one with the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) turbo petrol. Which ute saves you money?

Should you consider a hybrid ute if you were planning on buying a diesel? The answer will depend on the extra cost of the PHEV, how much driving you do in the city, and whether you will charge the hybrid’s battery.

We acknowledge you can get cheaper Chinese PHEV utes but to keep things fair, we’ve used two Ford Rangers for this test.

Another reason for using the Ranger is because it’s Australia’s best selling vehicle.

Here in Australia, the Ranger Hybrid costs $4400 more than the diesel V6 and a big $9600 more than the diesel four-cylinder.

The results may surprise you.
