Let’s UPGRADE the Hovsco HovGTRS E-Bike Suspension!
Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Tom’s Gadget Garage. Today I’m out here with the Hovskco HOV GTRS moped style eBike to see if a little suspension upgrade could add to the comfort, especially at the rear of this bike. Now, if you haven’t caught it already, I did make a first ride review where I quickly realized the rear suspension is quite stiff. So, what we’re going to be doing today is testing out two different shocks to see if we can soften things up a little bit. So, this particular bike does have a front fork suspension as well as this rear coil spring. Now, the coil spring on this bike is rated at 1,250 lbs, which means it takes 1,250 lb to compress this 1 in. And I’ll tell you what, on a bike like that, that’s quite intense. And that’s probably the reason why I’m not getting a lot of travel out of it. And here’s a view of the travel on the stock suspension. Something else to mention about the stock suspension setup is that there’s very little adjustability. It does give you the ability to adjust the preload on the shock, but I do have it at its softest setting, and it’s still quite firm. All right, folks. So, what I’m going to go ahead and do is ride on some of this bumpier terrain to give you an idea of what the travel looks like on the stock suspension. [Music] So, as you saw from that clip, there’s not a whole lot of travel in here. even though we were going over some pretty bumpy stuff. So, we’re going to go ahead and try it out with our next suspension setup. Next in line is going to be this shock that I bought from Amazon for about 78 bucks. It’s got a 650 lb spring, which is significantly less than the,250 lb spring we have on the stock setup. It’s also got uh preload adjustment as well as rebound adjustment there at the top. So, I’m going to go ahead and install this and we’ll see how this one does. Taking off this rear suspension is really easy. All you’ve got to do is get yourself two 5mm Allen keys and you can use those to undo the screws on either side of both the bottom and top attachment points. And after about a couple minutes, we got the new suspension installed. So, let’s go ahead and test this out. And this is what the travel looks like on the $78 suspension. Now with this new suspension, I can already feel a difference in the travel. So, as you saw from that footage, this $78 shock does have a little bit more travel, and I will say that it was a more comfortable ride compared to the stock shock. But let’s go ahead and see how our higher priced option compares. So, this here is a DNM shock. It’s the Burner RCP2S. Uh, it is also 190 mm shock with 51 mm of travel. And what I like about this is that it’s got compression adjustment at the top, rebound adjustment here at the bottom, and it’s also got that preload adjustment with the coil. So, how much better will the ride get for 139 bucks? Well, we’re about to find out. The installation procedure is exactly the same. It uses the same two 5mm Allen keys and slips right in there. And this is what it looks like fully installed. Here’s a quick view of the travel on the DNM suspension. All right, folks. Let’s see what $139 gets us. [Music] So, that was the DNM shock. Obviously cost quite a bit more at $139. Uh, from my perspective, it definitely felt a lot smoother and basically took the edge off a lot of the more harsher bumps. Uh, but overall, you know, I think both of those options are pretty solid upgrade over the stock shock. So, what’s nice about this HOSCO HOV GTRS is the fact that it does use standardized components. There’s nothing proprietary here. So, $190 millm shock can drop right into this setup. Anyways, let me know what you think in the comments section below. Is the $78 option worth the upgrade? How about the $139 DNM shock? Would love to hear your thoughts. If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, concerns, happy to address those in the comments section below. And as always, thank you so much for tuning in to Tom’s Gadget Garage. We’ll see you next time.
