1,059 Miles on a Charge? How Did GM Break the EV Range Record in a Silverado EV?
GM engineers just drove the Chevy Silverado EV over 1,000 mi on a full charge, breaking the world record for EV range. But how is that even possible when the Silverado EV work truck is rated by the EPA for 493 mi of range? So, let me explain. GM engineers wanted to see the absolute maximum range they could get out of this truck. That meant inflating the tires to a higher pressure, adding a bed cover that helps with aerodynamics, and not using the climate control at all since that can drain your EV’s battery. But probably the single most important thing they did was to limit their driving speed to between 20 and 25 mph in most situations. That’s how over 7 days, 40 GM employees managed to squeeze 1,059 mi of driving out of the Silverado EV. It didn’t hurt, of course, that this truck has what I believe is the biggest battery on the EV market. It’s a whopping 205 kilwatt hours and weighs about as much as a Honda Civic. So, with this test, GM unofficially beat the Guinness record that Lucid set last month when it drove an air nearly 750 m across Europe. It managed that with a battery that’s about half the size of the Silverados. So, what can regular EV drivers learn from this? The range you see on the window sticker isn’t always what you’ll get.
