The Best Electric Motorcycle Nobody Talks About
Zero Motorcycles sent me this Zero FX a couple of months ago and they said, “Why don’t you make a video where you take it ice racing?” It’s a great video. I can’t show you it cuz it’s not out yet, but I also made a video where I take this thing and I rode it all the way up to this lookout where there was still snow on the ground. I had studs on this thing. And I really hope that Zero doesn’t mind if I show you that cuz I’m going to. Well, we all have bad ideas. Couple of days ago, it’s 28 degrees, snowing, and I thought, I’m going to take this Zero FX that I put studs on and take it to the top of that mountain over there. I should be able to make it if there’s not too much snow, but there isn’t too much snow. It’s like 70° sunny. There’s a little bit of snow you can see behind me. Let’s see how it works out. I’ve got 93% battery. I think it’s like 24 mi round trip. So, if these studs don’t do something weird and cause it to use a bunch of energy, we should be good. There we go. Front tire feels weird. Back tire feels infinitely grippy. Electric. It is electric. Yeah. Let’s have a good ride. Look at this old abandoned ranch. Oh man, this is awesome. Yeah, the stunts are like I feel them, but I don’t hate them. 25 24 miles round trip, but downhill on the way back. Oh, mother Mary. Okay, studs on steel kettle guards are not the vibe. Oh, wa. Bike is feeling great. Studs, not so great. We’ve gone 7 miles. Uh, and we have 33 mi of range, it’s saying, but we are going uphill, so I think the range will get better as we go downhill. Hopefully, I’m not walking out of here. Uh, everything was great except for hitting that cattle guard back there, which was a little bit death to find. I see I don’t know if you can see. Yeah, right there. A little bit of snow right there. And I think the peak is actually somewhere up there. So, we might actually need these studs. [Music] Took a wrong turn. Almost missed it. Check this out, though. Let’s cut the corner a little bit, huh? So, I found snow. I’m not even sure this is the right road, to be honest. Let’s give it a try. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. Oh my god. Okay. I’m glad I brought the studs. Oh no, she’s clunking. We may have a problem. Snow is packing up this sprocket and it’s trying to break my belt. That’s not a good feeling. I’m uh almost 11 miles away from the car. That’s a long walk. The bike can do everything. It’s just, you know, it’s not designed for deep snow and the snow is packing into the axle. So, I’m going to keep going. Take it easy, though. I believe we’re getting close. We’re not that close. 13 miles. We’re through the snow on the sunny side. See it up there. Do one final climb here. We’ve got ourselves a locked gate, but I can see it. All right, parked the zero down there. There’s a locked gate and a lot of snow. It has 11 miles of range left. There’s 12 miles back down, but none of it matters cuz I made it to the top. Look at that view. I’ve always wanted to come here and the Zero made it. Let’s see if we can make it home. Bike made it. I absolutely ripped it going up and I was kind of nervous when it said uh 11 or 10 miles of range at the top and I still had 12 mi to get down, but it still says 12 mi. That range indicator spooked me. It’s got 18% battery left. Total distance 27.2 mi. And I’m really glad I put the studs on for that snow even though this thing is not a snow monster. Uh I think I should give it one more try. I think we should make another video where I take the studs out and I just let this thing go ham cuz it’s got it’s got so much power. [Music] I feel like I’ve just done this bike dirty. No bike is designed to go in the snow. Yes, it had a clunking issue. No, it wasn’t this bike’s fault, but I think it did best it could up there. And what we really need to do is use this bike for its intended purpose, which is dual sport. Now, you might say, “What is dual sport?” I would ask the same question. I don’t actually know, but I do know that this bike would be perfect for ripping into my little town, doing a little bit of highway, little bit of gravel roads, grab a burger, go for a swim. It’s that kind of bike. Basically, anywhere that people get annoyed by loud dirt bikes, this bike will be perfect at. So, let’s give it a try. I think for the first test, we should uh we should try a wheelie. I I don’t really know how to wheelie. Okay. Truth is, I I have no idea how to wheelie. I think the bike gets a 10 out of 10, but uh I’d give mine like a two out of 10. Let’s hit a jump. Huh, that was hard. We might need a landing for jumps. Nope. I think I’m going to break it. Yeah, if I come off of this. Yeah, I think I’ll break it if I launch this. [Laughter] Bystander telling me that I can do it. I think I think he’s right. If I roll off like this. There we go. Look at that. Easy piece. I have no idea what the horsepower of this bike is. I didn’t do any research, but they told me it has 78 foot pounds of torque. I also don’t know what that means, but I do know that that’s way more than a 450, like a dirt bike, and it feels way more than a 450. It’s super fun to just get on it. And it’s really fun. Actually, it has enough power to go on the highway, short distances. Battery doesn’t last very long, but man, if you get out there, you put it in sport mode, you just give her. So nice. All right, check this out. This is what I’m talking about. Full out on the highway. Go for it. Honestly, I think what electric bikes are best for and in turn this bike is probably best for is just a little bit of harmless hooliganism. You can go up a stair. If it doesn’t hurt the stair, nobody sees it. They don’t hear it. I don’t think it’s a problem. It’s perfect for that. It’s not quite wide enough to turn this bike around. Sorry, Fender. Little bit of rubber. Let’s get out of here. [Music] Back way to my burger place. Check this out. Yeah, bud. Getting my favorite burger place. God, it’s awkward talking to public. It’s a hour wait. So, we’re not going to do the burger part. Not tonight. But we could. [Music] Dylan, what did you say about this rock behind me that I always ride? It’s a lot steeper in person, man. Yeah, it is a lot steeper in person. It’s kind of scary for me, but uh it doesn’t look like anything on video, but I’m going to ride this hill and then maybe this hill. These are hard tires on here. It’s an electric bike. It weighs like 280 pounds, but you know, it’s just such a fun neighborhood ripper. It just makes you want to do all of it. So, uh, yeah. I’m gonna hit this hill. Things are going well. We’re gonna hit that hill. We’re not gonna drop this. Let’s do this. Oh, yeah. Analog brakes. This scare. This hill is going to be scary. Oh Got to run it out, I guess. I got to turn those analog brakes off. See if I can stop before I die. Huh? [Applause] This is crazy on this bike. Here we go. We We’ve I think we’ve reached the limit. I was held wide open. [Applause] Okay. Ready? We got her. Yeah, buddy. Sam’s here. You can see him in the distance. And he brought his Siron Ultra B. I’m going to do a comparison between this bike and that bike. A mediocre comparison. Sammy thinks that we’re going to be doing a uh a rowdy ride. I should probably buckle my helmet. He says that every time we go riding, it’s supposed to be chill and then it’s not. Is that true? Every time. Guaranteed I’ll be pushing this electric bike here in under 20. What are What are What are like three things we should compare? I’m going to say drag race. I want to see how much faster the Zero is than the Suron. What else? Yeah, on a hill climb. Yeah. No, Dad. That’s what I was looking for. Our first stop was a sandy hill climb with a near vertical exit. We both climbed the hill a couple times and it was dead even. So, we decided to switch bikes. You got to try this one. All right. You’re in sport. You ready to rock? You’re in sport. Holy cow, this thing feels light. Oh man, it feels like a toy. It’s so jerky though. Despite the Suron being extra snappy in turbo mode, I made the hill climb first gut. Wa! Oh my god, it’s so jerky. Sam, however, did not have the same results. Oh no. To be sure it wasn’t a fluke, I gave it another go. And yep, still made it. Wow. Yeah. Oh, that front tire is bad. You got it, Sammy. Full throttle. Oh my god. Okay, so I think we have a clear winner on the hill climber. Did you see me? The power comes on so smooth on the Zero like like a regular bike. This thing like is twitchy as a mother. I got to try one more time in this. See if this possible. [Laughter] Front tire blows back cuz he’s got a 19in front tire on that bike. We’ll do a battery check. 73 77. And this is my my local hard enduro zone. So this is uh this rock you’ve seen me hit. Dude, nice. No dabs. Nice work. Let’s draw a finish line and then we’ll we’ll do a short drag race. [Music] There’s the finish line. So, when it hits the ground, ready? Now, I’m used to riding dirt bikes, and with dirt bikes, you can give them a handful of throttle, lean forward, and they still get traction. But the geometry on this bike is different. I needed to be further back. Score one for Sam in the Sur. Nice. This time, I sat back a little bit more, leaned forward, and the bike rocketed out in the lead. Easy, boy. Easy. All right, one to one. On the third race, I did exactly the same. And the zero was faster. Yeah, boy. Win one for the zero. Of course, that meant we had to try more hill climbs. [Music] Dang, that looks so easy. I will call that a make. Yeah, I made one Sammy didn’t make. Now, obviously, we know that the Suron and the FX are not in the same class. One’s like a dual sport bike, one’s like a mediumsiz off-road bike. So, there was our uh comparison that was not actually a good comparison. Maybe next time. The Zero FX is a great bike. It’s a bonus that you don’t have to fill it up with gas. You can just plug it into your garage and it has so much less maintenance than a gas bike. But really, I think the best way for you to decide if it’s a good bike for you is to just go demo one cuz I promise you’re going to love it. I love it so much, I kind of hope that Zero just forgets about it for the rest of the summer and I get to use it. Thanks to Zero for sending me this bike and I’m sorry I took it out in the snow and did a bunch of stuff like jumping it that it’s not designed for, but honestly, it’s so fun. I want to do everything with it. So, please forgive me and uh send me more bikes. They’re very fun to review. I’d love to review all of them. And thanks to you for watching this video. Please think about subscribing. I’m actually trying to beat the hard enduro rider Cody Web and subscribers. And if I do beat him, he’ll train me and I desperately need that training. It might even make a fun video to watch. So, hit that subscribe button and thanks again for watching. Think you got to go buy one of these bikes now? I want to buy one of these bikes now. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Heat. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat.
I review the Zero FX by riding it in snow, back roads, urban, and hard enduro. It does it all and is so much fun.
Thanks to Zero Motorcycles for letting me try the FX.
