Trump Killed the Electric Car, Doug’s Bid History, a Bentley for Dogs? THIS CAR POD EP68
[Music] Hello and welcome to this car pod. I’m Ken. I’m Fippo. And there’s a lot to talk about. Let’s start with the news. Ah, EVs. It must be Fippo. Correct. The as part of the big beautiful bill that passed the Senate and was signed by the president last week. Uh the EV tax credit, which is $7,500 if you qualify, if the car qualifies, and there’s a used EV tax credit as well, will be phased out more quickly than expected. So, it’ll be done uh in September of this year. After that point, there’ll be no more EV tax credits. So, if you want to lease a Model 3, if you want to lease an Ionic 5D, if you want to lease a Mache, it’ll be notably more expensive because the federal government is not subsidizing it by $7,500. There is no EV tax credit at all. No EV tax credit at all. Now there there are to be very precise there are some credits that still apply to auto manufacturers. if they manufactured batteries in the US, if they open plants that build batteries in the US, there’s some tax credits for them, but there’s no consumer level tax credits, right? So, the idea is at the federal level. I just don’t understand how you can justify um with we we we’re sitting here knowing that other country and we’re going to get comments like we don’t need those EVs. you guys need to stick to. But like how do you how do you justify when other countries are manufacturing highquality top level vehicles and making inroads into global foreign markets where our automakers are sometimes number one like Ford in Latin America and in parts of Europe and you see China coming in with these EVs that are so heavily subsidized by the government. How do you justify our government saying peace out we’re done we’re gonna just back off this? It’s like a self own. Yep. the the the rationale that they would share is probably that uh if there is demand for these you don’t need to incentivize them you don’t need the federal government to intervene but clearly a lot of EV adoption in the US has been driven by there being large incentives by that bringing the price down to competitive levels your point I think it’s a valid one I mean there’s there’s incentives for so many things people are complaining EVs well there’s no EV incentive we don’t need EVs if there was an incentive if there wasn’t an incentive people would buy them it’s you know like like the government’s putting the incentive on and that’s the only thing making people buy. Well, the government puts a massive incentive on buying a home, right? You can deduct your mortgage interest. That’s a huge government incentive. Do people take advantage of that? Does that artificially inflate property values? Probably. It’s probably also generally good, at least for homeowners. In this case, this would be good for the American people, the American auto industry. Um, it’s a very head approach. It’s a shame to do this because obviously what the way that the automakers will respond is by presumably not putting as much R&D into electric cars because the market won’t demand them in the short term. But in the long term, other countries will realizing that this is obviously the future. I think even the Republicans would probably agree about that. Um, in the long term, the other automakers will then be way ahead and when it does finally come time for the American brands to come back into the old EV world, we’re already going to be way behind. I I you know it’s it’s it’s it’s unfortunate. The government incentivizes a lot of stuff in order to get it off the ground before the public is ready. And once the public then gets there, then we already have a builtup industry. Anyway, I’m just I I know it’s a little bit of a political story, but I’m disappointed by it. I’m not an EV guy. I’ve never owned one. I’m not that into them. Um but but they serve a massive purpose. I mean, you see how many Model 3s and Model Y’s are getting sold. Um they’re great commuters. They’re great point A to point B boring, easy cars, Uber and taxis and yeah, they’re fantastic for that. And so I guess the question then is if this deincentivizes major manufacturers to stop developing these cars, what does that do for companies that only produce? Yeah, I mean we can’t foretell the future. There’s a lot of analysts kind of like stock analysts that do expect that this will help Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, companies that will have to continue to invest in that to live. Uh there’s also a question though of can those companies survive if they’re instead of Tesla’s Have you been on Tesla’s website, Ken? Go to Tesla’s website right now. Have you you seen this? Yeah. Tesla’s website right now has a massive banner at the top. The biggest the biggest like banner I have ever seen on Tesla’s website. $7500 federal tax credit ending. Come get your car. Yep. Now, some of the the really expensive EVs have already not qualified, right? part of the inflation reduction act that the the B administration passed limited what price the like changed the cap for for prices and made it so the car needs to be built in the US with some US componentry uh so some of especially the higherend EVs don’t have not been receiving a tax credit so maybe that that means that Rivian Lucid are a little bit less impacted yeah but nonetheless big deal nonetheless it’s an interesting thing I to be honest I think we should probably be going in the other direction I think we should probably be forcing automakers more and more to figure out new and better technologies so that they can compete on the global scale. You know, the America is not the only country anymore and and it’s it’s not even the largest market. You laugh, but for for a long time, America was like the car market, you know, like if you could succeed in America, you were a global automaker. And now Asia exists and and you know, these other developing markets will start to be invaded essentially by Chinese brands because American brands aren’t up aren’t going to be up to their standards. And that’s partially because of decisions like this. Anyway, that’s just my take. It’s I I’m I’m not an EV person myself. I got a V10, V12, Canon. We’re all You got a charge port ready to go in your garage. You’re you’re ready to make that switch when it happens. Yeah, but I’m, you know, I’m I’m not like jumping out there to buy an EV. They got to come to me with a Mercedes wagon first. Matter of fact, there it is. That’s right. All right. Give us our next news story, please. Ah, yes. Oh, more EVs. Speaking of EVs, Fippo, do you want to talk about this? Yeah. I mean, Slate is I I said this when Slate announced their premise, which was we’re a new car that is under 20 grand. That was driven by a $7,500 tax credit. That’s gone. Period. The the the Slate will not be out before then, obviously. Uh that’s gone. So, that’s now a $27,500 truck in the pricing that they announced when they launched as a publicity stunt, right? That’s not an appealing new car price. That that that’s not like a cheap vehicle anymore. No, the Maverick starts at 27 and has four doors and more than 180 miles of range and you know history behind it. Let’s say they’re go I mean complet I think that’s completely right and requires no infrastructure in order to you know charge it at home and or add speakers you know things like that. you. So, so here’s a question. Is Is Slate I mean, is it over? Like, I noticed they’ve changed their website to say that it starts in the mid20s now because the $20,000 thing was like their big selling point. Is it over? Like, is it over over? No, probably. Are people still interested in this? A lot can happen between now and the end of 2026 or whenever they said it was the first ones were going to come out. They hope certainly that people would be interested in them. But man, that pricing does not work in their favor anymore. Yeah. Are you interested? No, I wasn’t interested before, but I’m certainly not interested now that But you went to their event. That didn’t sway you. No, I figured it wouldn’t. Doesn’t get swayed by by things like that. Although he happily would consume it. Um, so that’s it. That’s it for Slay. We all Are we sitting all here sitting predicting their demise? I mean, Filippo basically just did. I mean, it’s hard to have a demise when you haven’t done anything yet, you know? I mean, that’s kind of They have some pretty serious backers, though. You have to assume they will come to market. I I think they’ll come to market. I think there’s a chance that it becomes like a cult hit. I think there’s a chance that by the time it comes to market, there’s other incentives at play. Uh that means that it can be interesting again. But you you got to assume there will again be I I just went on this rant about killing the EV tax credit is a mistake, but you got to assume the Democrats get back into power if such a thing is ever possible again. um do they’ll probably put another EV tech or even a split a more moderate Congress would probably do it too recognizing some of the stuff that I was just talking about. Um I wouldn’t be surprised if they push launch if they decide to wait till there is a more supportive climate for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they change some of their packaging to uh add options back in that they had planned to be options to try to make that price point more worth it. But I will say though, if your car is is kind of lives and dies by the political winds, you know, it’s not really, you know, the Mustang’s been going since ‘ 64 and a half. And that’s electric. It went through Vietnam. It went through the Gulf. It went through 911. Here it go. Yeah. Now it’s an electric SUV. Uh so, you know, it’s great. It’s doing great. Uh so anyway, Slate, I I this isn’t even a news story. Like this this is this is only a news story in the sense that things have changed for them. like there’s no news about it, but it it is interesting to speculate on what happens there. Yeah. Uh especially after all the hoopla hype just a couple of months ago when they first announced. One of the smartest apps you can have on your phone in 2025 is Upside. Upside What a what a day for me. I was gone for a week and I get to talk about EVs just the entire day today. This is great. Uh, hang in there. There’s a Ferrari story later on. Just you keep going. Rivian finally announced the R1T and R1S that we all knew was coming, which is a quad motor R1T R1S. Have you heard about this? I have. Do you have any idea how much power this puts out? It’s got to be a 1000 something, right? Yeah. It’s It’s uh 1,025 horsepower, 1198 poundft of torque from a motor in each wheel. That’s insane. 2.5 seconds 0 time. It’s insane, but it’s not surprising anymore. Everything that comes out that’s new in EV is a 1000 horsepower it feels like. And back back in my day when the and you know Doug recalls the Veyron, 1000 horsepower, it’s like oh my god. And now it’s like Yeah. Yeah. But it also I mean 2.5 seconds 0 60. I will say Jason Kamisa over at Hagerty had a phenomenal drag race video with this and a Lucid uh Gravity and a Macan EV Turbo and a couple other cars. Cyber Truck included. No. Uh but the just the speed off the line that that the R1S that they tested had just wild to watch. It’s limited to 130 and at the 1/4 mile it’s should be past 130. So that slows it down but insane. Oh, really? Yeah. Couple of other quick things. What did What did it run the quarter in? I don’t remember from the video. you have to look, but I think it’s a 10.5 second quarter mile. It’s running 10, but it’s but it’s but it’s top speed limited. Interesting. Could be a little faster. Uh, hey Ken Ken, you make such an interesting point. I remember when I was a kid, it was generally agreed that like the supercars of today will be the like the normal cars of like 20 years. And and that was that was you could see that happening like the Ferrari 308 like by the time I was a a kid the Camry was that fast and it was like okay that that will happen and you could imagine it and I was like then the Veyron came out and I was like well that’ll never happen again and no it didn’t it actually did happen again the you know 20 years later here we are a pickup truck that you’re going to be able to buy on cars and bids for $47,000 in about four years. It has more power than a Veyron. So, where does it go from here? Or does it go anywhere from here? Because I mean, there’s only some It goes to fish tanks. I’m serious. No, this this sounds insane. Fleo’s looking at me like like my dog does when I’m holding a tree. But here’s my thinking. Power is done. Power is done. They’re the next frontier is weird quirks. M. Well, so the gear tunnel like that truck has and fish tanks and any other thing that we can throw in these vehicles to make them stand out. Power is no longer going to make vehicles stand out. Acceleration is longer make things vehicle stand out. An indoor basketball court would make a vehicle stand out. I’m not that’s not as insane as it sounds. The Chinese are on just their cars are jumping. Their cars can float. You know, I mean, you got a point. This is a field day for you. Talk about job security. That’s right. It is a field edition, but I legit think that like the cars of the future will no longer be distinguished by powertrain or performance. They will be distinguished by what like amenities they offer. And yes, the that’s such a good point. The Chinese already have already figured this out. I’m over here like I’m groundbreaking, but no, I’m not. The Chinese, once again, the Chinese beat me to it probably because I have no tax credit personally. That’s where I had a tax credit to ideate. If if they paid if they gave me like money off my taxes to just sit and think, I would have thought of this. Um, a couple of other things on the R1S and R1T quad motor to get back on track. Uh, R1T is about 118K, including destination. R1S is 124ish with destination. It now has tank turn. It can do the same tank turn that the G wagon can do, etc. Which is exciting. Yes, apparently off-road capability as good as you’d expect from Rivians, which is incredibly good. motor in each wheel means that there’s a lot of controllability, which is cool. And and no drive line in the middle. By the way, tank turn is an example of a fish tank. True. That’s a fish tank as a category. It’s a it’s a fish tank. A fish tank turn in fact. Uh nice. Thank you. Couple of other things. No, it is. It is. It’s It’s a gimmick that like is something they can offer. Yep. Rivian has also announced that coming out in September, there’ll be a bunch of new customizability on all of their new R1S and R1T. you can change every single setting of the the uh each motor, the suspension, etc., which will be interesting. Uh, and the last thing I want to mention is something that we talked about a few weeks ago, which is that there’s only like two ways to identify the the R1S you’re seeing as a quad motor and has a,000 whatever horsepower, and that is blue brake calipers and a slightly different badge. That is it. They are missing so many opportunities to make the fact that they have a,25 horsepower, 1200 lbft of torque SUV and instead they have a light slightly different badge that says quad in tiny letters and blue brake calibers. You know, I find this that’s an this is an interesting segue into a topic we should have covered a while ago, which is in today’s world of excess and showmanship and and things being okay kind of to be showy. um where where there are so many people wear overtly wearing brands and building bigger houses and bigger yachts and like this is a thing private planes. It’s weird to me that several cars have done this recently. It’s not just Rivian. The Wrangler 392 is basically impossible to tell apart from a regular Wrangler. The Defender Octa is basically impossible to tell apart. But but I mean we’re talking minor stuff. This ain’t a Raptor, you know, like I assumed they would make a Raptor with fenders and graphics and wheels and they really didn’t. This is another example. We always talk about how loose it is like this. We Tesla with the plaid badge that you can buy on eBay. It’s kind of interesting. Why aren’t they do like it’s it’s cheaper to manufacture of course, but the whole thing has always been you want people to sp you know they look like they spent more and they want to brag to their neighbors, right? And so many performance brands have done this in the past. I mean like the end cars of modern air where it was largely a body kit. You upgrade stuff but like you it is visually instantly definable. Yeah, it it is a weird thing to like let go by the wayside. It just feels low hanging fruit. Flip side to that. If you’re Swiss and don’t want anybody to know you have the offensive one, success. You’re already good. You’re already good. You don’t even You don’t need to debatch. Yep. Yeah. Well, not many of us are Swiss. Um sadly, thank God. No, I’m kidding. I love the Swiss. For a long time, I hated the Swiss and then I realized I was just jealous of them. Yep. Uh okay, move on to the next news story, which is our most important news story, the Nurburg Ring crash. Oh, it’s this. Let’s talk about the Nerburg. Why did the Nurburg ring crash? Okay, there was a crash with the Nurburg Ring. Filippo, did you see the video? I did. You’re going to play it? Yeah. Oh my god. Okay, the Porsche comes in here and then bam. Gets whacked by this M2. Yeah. Boom. Bam. Now that is a serious impact. Both drivers were okay. Shockingly, that’s first of all, testament to modern cars. That’s the talking point more than anything. like they both they walked away 15 years ago like this I don’t know I don’t know that you would have walked away from watch this again now I want to things I want to stress a couple of things on the at the Nurburg Ring you must pass on the left like it’s a freeway that’s the rule and the Porsche was doing that something that nobody’s talking about about this crash is that the BMW was from the UK it has British license plates and so the driver was on the other side of the car so the Porsche was coming into a blind spot Now, when you’re on the racetrack like this, you should be very aware of where everybody is at any point. Um, however, I have a suspicion that that played a little bit of a role. It’s a serious serious accident. They have these tourist days at the Nurburg Ring. This happened during a tourist day. You’re not supposed to go flat out during a tourist day. You’re supposed to just kind of go. And so, a lot of people are putting some of the blame on the Porsche driver because uh he he that was a somewhat risky pass. That would have been a very acceptable pass in a race. Uh, but in in a tourist day where you’re passing just a guy who drove in from the UK, it’s a little sketchy. Nonetheless, to me, it looks like the BMW probably should have been aware, especially because there’s a longer in-car video of the Porsche where the Porsche is on the BMW’s tail for turn after turn. And it’s really clear that the Porsche is ready to pass. And if you know anything about cars, as the driver of a BMW M2 driving at the Nurburgring Wood, you know that your car is slower. Nonetheless, crazy stuff. But yes, I think the big story here is uh what I mean the front end of the Porsche came off like off. There was a fire. Yeah, it was. Yeah, it ruptured the fuel tank. There was an instant fire. Um I mean it was in the air like this like it was it was traveling you know on a plane 180 like you normally would to the ground and then it was 90° to the ground and so like that’s you know wild that’s some wild stuff. Um and then to and then to be okay I mean I presume these guys are wearing helmets but they probably don’t have roll cages. These are just cars, you know, and and to be fair, like the the passenger compartment is impressively intact in both modern engineering. Every time I see a an accident with a high-speed accident with a modern car on a dash cam or whatever, I’m always astonished by the crumple zones. They they really do a great job of keeping the passenger compartment intact. It’s really amazing. Especially impressive because this was real speed. I mean, in that video, the 911 was doing about 200 km an hour, uh, which is real real speed. There’s not crash testing at that speed. And you know also that I mean these were both relatively light vehicles which helped them both the amount of uh just energy in that crash is crazy insane. You’re right that there’s not crash testing at that speed and it frankly the automakers are not really incentivized to create a safe car at that speed. I mean a a safe car in theory is safe in all s but like the automakers don’t if someone’s going 130 mph and they die in the car the automaker’s like well but here we go. So Kenon let me ask you this. Does this make you scared to drive the Nurburg Ring and or want a GT3 RS? Uh well well GT3S is a wonderful car. I don’t know what I would use one for. It’s a little bit too extreme for me. I would I do want to go to the Nurburg Ring and drive around it. I’m just genuinely still terrified to do so even as a tourist. Like I for not just for reasons like this, but I just don’t want to be in other people’s way, which I inevitably will be. Um I would do the ring taxi thing is still what I think I would do. And you know, have some a professional scare me in an M5. I think that would be great. You would be in people’s way, but like if you watch those Ring videos, sometimes I get into people people are in people’s way. I mean, there’s people who drive, you know, Volkswagen Polos and just kind of do it and nobody’s a timing on a tourist day, you know. I think I think everybody has to do it and then you earn the right to have the sticker on something I would never put on the car, of course. Um, but I think that I think that um I think it would be it would be it would be fun and I will do it at some stage. Have you done it, Doug? You’ve done it, haven’t you? Have you driven the I’m not a big I’m not a big like track driving motorsports guy. I would love to do it. Um, it’s also not tremendously convenient to the places that I like to vacation in Europe. And and when I travel, I usually don’t car make cars like a component of my vacation. My last vehicle when I was in Europe that I rented was a Mercedes V220D, uh, which I crashed. Uh, and so, so probably not a great start for you then if crashing happened off the track to begin with. Right. Right. Right. Um, but I think it would be cool. I think it would definitely be interesting. And Ken, I think that you should do it and report back. Aren’t you going to Europe here in the next couple of weeks? I am. We can talk about it a little bit more. I plan to in the talk car segment uh when we get there. But yes, I am going to Europe very soon and we’ll be doing a lot of We got Penn’s Europe trip coming up, folks. Uh all right, give us our next news story. That’s chaos. Ah, yes, the Bentley EXP 15. So, this is a concept that Bentley recently released that is again underscoring concept. Now, they have an EV that’s coming out next year and this allegedly will have some tie into that car, but there are a couple of things to note about it. One of them is that this car, one thing I think is it retains this huge slabby grill and front end. Now, it’s an EV, which means it doesn’t need a grill. No. But Bentley decided as a styling thing, they wanted to keep this quote to retain to create a piece of digital art. That’s how they described this this front grill. But the thing is that are weird about this concept and why it’s clearly a concept is it only has three seats despite being when they showed pictures of this they had it next to a 1930 30 Bentley Speed 6 which is a massive car and they had it next to that and then you look at it and it’s like it seats three people and there’s a spot to put your dog which is that’s right wait you may be excused. So instead of having a fourth seat, see Brit being being a British car. I’ll I’ll pull up a picture of it. Um so in instead of being instead of having another seat, so this you see your dog. It’s a dog. That is a concept car and their concept car photos. But you you you have to assume that this portends the direction that Bentley Design will go. May I give you a hot take? A Shawn style hot take right here. I like it. You like it? I I’ll tell you why I like it. I’ll tell you why I like it. Go to Go to a picture of the current generation Continental GT. Yeah. I mean, go the new Type in new Continental G. He’s not going to find the new one. He’s going to find the old one cuz Well, okay. So, that’s the new Continental GT, right? Great. All right. Now, type go to go find a picture of the 2019 Continental GT. All right. Are you going to make him go through every single six years? Because you got a ways to go. No, no, no, no, no. I I’ve there’s only four generations somehow. 2019 Continental GT. You got that pulled up? Okay. Now, go to see a picture of the 2013 Continental GT. Even I can pick up on a pattern in post. It’s going to make a lot more sense in post. All right. 2013 Continental GT. Okay. Now, go to a picture of the 2007 Continental GT. Yeah. Know, they they needed a new direction. I agree. At the end of the day, I think this thing the the concept car thing is kind of heinous, but like this is they’ve been iterating. This car came out in 2003. like to point out there’s one more continental you’re missing. What? No, those are the four the flying spur. There’s a 1997 Continental. Well, okay, but you’re missing the point I’m making. I know the point you’re making, but I love they do iterate occasionally since they haven’t in 20 years. I here’s the thing. I agree they need a new design language and I actually do like that it look it has more presence than the same. Yeah, the the new one has more presence which we talk about like Rolls-Royce values kind of holding because there’s such road presence in their design that this has that it also looks I think like what the Jaguar TE’s design looks like. It does look like that. And it has Aston Martin taillights and it’s weird. It’s weird. I don’t know. It’s it’ll it is interest if this is the direction Bentley goes. It is it is kind of back to the more square, boxy, stately, fire your dad look of the Arnage and the original Continental. Um, but which are cars that we love. Cars that we love the the the the Brooklyn’s. I mean, this has Brooklyn’s vibes. This has Brooklyn’s vibes. Yep. Especially I could picture. Yeah, I I can see it. So, I mean, again, it’s a concept that this might not factor into it at all on the end. Who knows? There’s also a very modern interior in the prototype or in the the the pictures that they’ve shown. Looks kind of cool. The dog picture. Yeah, that picture has a very modern interior like huge touch screen and then cool. And I gota say in the world of three-seater British cars, you know, which is this and the T50, uh the T50 can’t store a dog. So that there’s another one which is the speed tail. And I’ll tell you something, they’re all illegal in the US, including this because of airbag regulations. Wow. Um the the the the rear seats need to have an airbag. Like there’s a certain number of inches from the seat that the airbag has to be. And this would not this would not be allowed in the US. Not that it will cuz it’s a concept car, but I do think it, as Filippo says, portends or perhaps he means behooves the future of uh Bentley design. And you know what? I’m I’m ready for a radical change. I’ve been it’s been too iterative, too. We need something to come in and fire your dad. All right, give us the next news, gentlemen. with the SP3 Daytona. So, the SP3 is coming to its end of production. Ferrari has said that they’re going to build one more. They built 599 599 examples for the world. Officially 599. We’ll see if that remains true. And they’re going to build one more, the 500 of or the 600 of 599. And this one isn’t going to a customer directly is going to auction. They’re auctioning it off for charity. All the proceeds will go to one of Ferrari’s charities. So, this is the easiest way if you want a brand new SP3 Daytona to get it because nobody could get an allocation for that car was impossible to come by. And Ferrari said look like that or can you confuse? That is the unfortunate thing. It does have to look like this. And for our audio listeners, it is half yellow, half exposed carbon fiber. And it says, in case you didn’t know it was a Ferrari. It has Ferrari script on the hood, but it says FER, part of another R and then cabin. And then on the back, it finishes the rest of it, which I think is amazing. But don’t worry, it doesn’t end there. It comes with a bunch of accessories. They’re giving you all the new car stuff, but it also comes with something. It comes with a carbon handbag. They’re calling calling the Marinella clutch. Now, wow. I always relate that with a to a sound cuz, you know, in in a Marinella clutch, you know, you go as as it wears out the clutch as you shift gears. But no, this is a bang Marinella 575 Marinella clutch does that. But this it’s just it’s out it’s it’s just outrageous. Um yeah, if you’re an audio listener, he said it’s half yellow and half green. I want to point out the hats are the right and left. It’s not like the front and back. The driver, you know, and I think they’re making a commentary there because Ferrari is all about the driver and so the the driver side is all bare carbon and aggressive and the other side painted. I don’t carbon on one side. Bare carbon. Yes. I don’t hate it. Yeah. It doesn’t You don’t hate it. People who only think this car is yellow. Yeah. And there are other people who only think it’s driving down the road and then there people who see it from above and those people get the real show. They go fur that it’s a furry I legitimately don’t think it looks that bad. I don’t think the SP3 is a particularly attractive automobile. So this doesn’t hurt it. Dude, if they made the SP3 with a stick, I would never even think about the F40 ever again. All my thoughts would be about the SP3. Yeah. So, the uh correct correct me if I’m wrong because this is not my world, but a a 500th La Ferrari sold for something like $7 million at at the time, which was five times the original MSRP. Do you expect this to go for five times whatever the SP3 is? I think the MSRP the SP3 is about $2 million. I think $10 million car. I don’t know about I mean, maybe. I don’t know. It’s going to be very identifiable. Easiest way to get one, but also it cost 5x. No, I bet you it is 10 million. First off, it’s probably a write-off. It’s a charity auction probably a write-off. I don’t know how they do their charity auctions, but you can never really trust results from charity auctions because a lot of the time it’s a tax deduction for the person who’s who’s buying the good because usually what it is is you pay the full value of the good 2 million and then you can write off the amount of I’m not sure how that’ll work and it’s Italy and who knows, but that’s often how these things go. Second, um the last of these cars is always really special. The final Enzo, which was given to the Pope and then auctioned for um tsunami relief victims, is still a famous car. Like the last of breed is like still car. And the SP3 is the greatest they’ve made since the F50. So it has it has some value, too. Yeah, I Yeah, I suppose it is a shame it looks like that, but that’s uh that’s just how it Nonetheless, that is the that is the end of the the SV3 Daytona. I hope they still make some NASCAR stuff. seems unlikely given that the F80 is going to be is a turbo hybrid V6, but nonetheless SP3 Daytona. Well, I think they will still make 12-cylinder stuff because they actually currently just came out with a new car called the 12cylindry that has 12. Yes, but I my limited edition crazy stuff like this. Like I can hope that that continues to be something and I I think they should. I bet it will. Uh, okay. We need to move on to the talk car segment, which is when we talk about cars. Now, you’ve been thinking we’ve been talking about cars. No, no. We talk about cars differently in this segment. And um this segment is brought to you by Cars and Bids, which is the finest place on the internet. Yep. Done. Period. No other qualifiers. And offense. Um yeah. Um I want to talk about uh Kenan’s European road trip. Kenan, tell us about this. Yes. So I am going to Europe. A friend of mine, Luke, is getting married uh in France. His wife’s family is is soon to be wife’s family is is mostly from there. So, all my friends and I are getting together and descending upon Europe to go to the wedding. Uh, and I am turning it into a very much a grand tour. So, I’m flying into Frankfurt, spending a day there, picking up a car, then driving to Paris, spending a couple days there, then down to Lamoge where the wedding is, then to the south of France, spending a little time in Monaco. Doug tells me I shouldn’t waste my time there. But I’ve never been to Monaco, and I want to see cars. Straman was there. You got to be there. I Right. I I take this I take it back. I take it back. I mean, I don’t think I’ll ever go again, but I I I was look I watched I made a video. Yeah. You watched that car spotting in Monaco video. I watched that video again like a couple weeks ago. God knows why. And I’m like, “Oh my god, I used to see there must it was so crazy.” I will say I did that before there were car spotter kids running around everywhere. And I’m told that now it’s like pretty intense. Like there’s just kids with cameras like everywhere. Any part of that video there’s crazy stuff driving by. It’s like a wild video to watch. Yeah. I mean 458 was near. I mean, it is an un Yeah, for those of you who can’t see this like every part of this video, I was watching this like jaw dropped. I couldn’t I couldn’t I didn’t remember that it was quite as insane as it was, but it was insane. 177. I mean, that is nuts. Now, granted, I am expecting it to mostly be brand new stuff because this was new stuff at the time and you Vanquish was on when it drove. There’s there’s you you will see some older stuff. You’ll see some older stuff for sure. But I am very excited. Some older stuff. I also do want to kind of go Oh, 612. I want to go kind of wander around and like, you know, I’ve been parking garages. I want to go do the Monaco thing. I’m staying not far from there. Um I’m staying there for a little Enzo. Wow. Um I’m staying there for a little while. Then I’m then I’m going on dropping my friends off there, flying back to the United States. And then I continue by myself. I’m going along the Riviera and then up into Italy and staying at Lake Ko. Then I’m going through Switzerland to to Likenstein cuz I want that passport stamp as one of the weird be a passport stamp. You recognize that, right? They do stamp it there because it’s a tourist thing. They know that’s why people go. I got it. I tourist office. Yeah. You go into the tourist office and they stand before you like real. Whatever. It’s worth it to me. It is real. So I was there. I walked into the tourist office. There was one group ahead of me and they were riding a motorcycles from Iceland with Iceland planes. That’s what I’m hoping. That’s the sort of stuff I’m looking to find. Um and then from there I’m going to Strickart. I’m going to the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum. Staying very close to the Porsche, which I’m very excited about. And then from there I’m doing the big thing for me one week after my friend is married is the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa and I’m going to Spa. I’m s I have seats at the base of Urouge. So as a Formula 1 fan I’m there for Get this video out of here. It’s distract. It’ll distract. It’s Fippo’s distracted already. I And if if I’m distracted, every viewer is too. Yes. So So you’re going to Formula 1 like you’re gonna see uh Vettle or or uh whoever he’s there because he’s not driving. if he’s there in a in a different capacity, I you know, I’d love to see him. Um, but yes, I’m going to go see Formula 1 at my favorite racetrack. The Belgian Grand Prix is my favorite race every single year. Spa is my favorite circuit. And so to be there is like it’ll be a life-changing thing. I’m staying pretty close to the track, too, which is awesome. Uh, I’m there for all three days. And it’s unbelievably inexpensive to do this. By the way, if if be these larger legacy circuits get a big deal from Formula 1, the ticket the amount they have to kick up to the sport basically is substantially lower than other circuits like the new newest ones in the United States that are owned by the the sport itself. And so the tickets are not expensive. I think I paid €500 for the whole three days. Wow. Whereas like I’m also going to the Mexican Grand Prix in the fall and that was €500 for just sun or $500 for just Sunday. Um, so it it seems like a deal to me if you can get there, of course, like the the cost is incurred getting there. But nonetheless, um, it should be quite a trip. I’m gone for a while. Um, but so I will not be on the next couple of podcast, which makes me sad. Wait, you’re leaving? This is your last pod? This is my last pod for a couple of weeks. Yes. And then I will be back in regalia with stories of Europe. We’re going to lose Ken. We’re going to lose Kenan. I’m sure a crazy nickel fill in. Driving around Europe going to Monaco. You driving an M5 around Monaco. Damn. Well, it’s it’s going to it’ll be exciting. I I can’t wait to go and it’ll be it’ll be a great trip. I haven’t been back to Europe in a very long time, so I’m really excited for I’m excited to see some very small European cars for you and I’ll take some pictures of stuff for you and I’ll I’ll send it I’ll submit it as a question. Please do. Please enjoy Italy especially, which is the best country. It is. I wish I could be there longer, but I’ll ask. I’m excited for you for one race. Kenon, remember two things. You can go as fast as you want in Italy. However, and and there’s no exceptions to that. In Germany, you there it’s only when the lines are through the thing. I don’t know if you know the symbol, but I know the symbol. In Switzerland, do not even go 1 m an hour above the speed limit. I’m not screwing with you. Your friend will be arrested the next time he even thinks. I plan to set this this the uh the speed governor below the speed limit. Just set the cruise control. It will be the smoothest roads you’ve ever been on. That I am that are empty. I’m excited for like the you know Switzerland is a country I wish I could spend more time into. I don’t have any time to do watch stuff unfortunately but that’s how it goes. What a shame. What a damn shame. I’ll tell you Likenstein beckons. You know Beckens. Yeah. You know, hey, when I was in Likenstein, I saw a uh Gc. Huh. Oh, I’ll keep an eye open for it. They have the best license plates in all of Europe. So, there’s some things going for it. Yeah. I actually thought Venus was a very cute little city and I think you will enjoy your trip and I’m very sad that you’re going to be leaving us but it sounds like it’ll be magical. I think it will be it’ll be it’ll be a fun trip and I haven’t done a trip like this in a very long time so it’ll be fun. A proper grand tour. I’m excited. Apparently not coming with you. I didn’t say she wasn’t. Oh wow. She has but it might be Yeah, we her M3 CRT doesn’t get the best fuel economy. All right. Um, you got some topics for us, but they’re not very interesting except for the Abarth. Let’s talk about the Aarth. I have a F500 Bar Cabriolet. I’ve had it for two and a half years. I’ve put not very many miles on it. It’s been reliable fully. It’s never needed anything. It’s never gotten anything. Uh, and very soon it’s going to be on Cars and Bids. I’ve just How are you going to disclose the the poor way in which you’ve treated the car? Like, what is your plan? I I do have a plan which is there’s going to be a video where I go through every single flaw. I learned of a flaw two weeks ago when I was when I was driving with some friends and they pointed out some flaws of the car that I can’t see. You’re not going to be able to capture all the flaws in I’m going to try. It’s going to be a 20-minute long video and it’s going to be every single flaw I can think of. We have some disclo some language we use to disclose cars that are particularly rough. I don’t think your car is rough enough to qualify for that. It’s a bitter responsibility to review the photo gallery and do part of placing a bid. Yeah. Uh I’m familiar. Uh no, I the car has been great. It has been legitimately flawless in that it’s never had a single mechanical issue that has stranded me in any way. It’s gone just oil changes. It has been legitimately reliable. I just am no longer like enjoying the experience that much. I’ve had it two and a half years. Driven around a bunch. And I presume you’re not enjoying the GTI either. So no, I do like the GTI. The the G GTI is excellent. I’m on this side on the GTI. There’s a part of me and my wife wants me to do this which is I should sell it and we don’t have kids and I could now’s the time to have like a sports car NSX want to NSX. No. Uh maybe uh there’s another part of me that’s like the GTI is great and but my wife has said that it’s the that she loves that car and it’s her favorite car around. So are you do you ever get tired of standing in your own way? Does that does that No, I I’m going to be honest. I don’t put that much thought towards Do your knees hurt? What’s that? I don’t put that much thought towards this. This car is so bad. But Filippo, don’t you want for once in your life to do something raw like Kenan just told us he’s going on a European road trip in an M5. He’s going to Paris, God knows why, and various other good places. And he’s going to be driving around Europe, shifting gears, going 160 mph on the autobond until the oil pan destroys itself. And he’s he’s gonna have a blast. He’s going to spa froncho chomps. That’s how we pronounce it. And you’re over here. Well, I’m not sure. I think I am. I am. What can I say? Sell one hatchback and keep another hatchback. Canon has grabbed life by the horn. Well, I have a confession to make. I So, I was supposed to do this in an E39 M5. I was going to buy You’re doing it in an Opal Corsa. I thought Well, that was available, but no, I I think I’m going to have to add him up. He’s having work done to the car. It’s not going to be quite ready in time. And he’s having a child. So, it’s like he’s and he’s moving shops and he’s got like a lot of stuff going on. And he’s had two cars borrowed by friends that are recent like destroyed by his friends by Yes. So, like and I don’t want to do that to him cuz I like him a lot. Car. What? So, I don’t know. It’s either going to be an X3 M50i of uh from from six. No, you need a a bad small hatchback. No, I I want good comfortable. No, you don’t. You don’t. You you need a an open course or similar thousands of k doesn’t matter. That’s what we do every time we go to Italy. You need you need a small car. You need a European small car. I’m going to nine countries. Felip that’s like going from people in the Northeast that say they’ve been to 17 states cuz they drove 3 hours. Doesn’t count. It you need a small European hatchback with a manual. You just do. I can’t happen. Yes, it was. We were going I was going to surprise my friend Luke and have it there who listens to the podcast, but unfortunately it just didn’t quite work out timing wise. Ken, just as I was over here telling Fippo to grab life by the horns. You’ve Well, I wanted to It was my fault. I I should have better coordinated with him. I was like there’s servicing stuff like that or detailing stuff that just didn’t quite get done. Sounds like he’s bailing on you. Um well, to be honest with you, to drive that car around Europe, especially into Paris or anywhere in Italy, makes me nervous. It’s a it’s very special car that belongs to someone who is very special too. And so like small European hatchback. I don’t I’m not doing that agree with but I do think that um it makes sense. I mean it is a little sketchy to drive a car that you care about uh that far in places you’re unfamiliar with on roads you’re unfamiliar with in countries that have different rules. I mean I truly I almost always end up having some sort of damage on cars when I go to Europe. how how it doesn’t matter because I’m not careful, right? But right, and the thing is the thing is Fippo, I don’t want to be careful because that’s kind of the benefit of it, right? Like if if you if if you rent a car and get the insurance and all that, you don’t have to think, oh, I can’t fit there. I got to and then you’re next to you’re seven miles outside the city center walking back in. Exactly. And ultimately, like if I need to swap this car out in a major city, if something goes wrong, it’s easy to from a rental company. if something goes wrong in E39 M5 and I have to ship it from Monaco to Frankfurt that that sucks. That’s not great. So, I certainly thought about that. Now, it is still my dream to drive my own car in Europe. And that was kind of the point that Threaten was making. He loves letting you know friends of his borrow these cars so they can experience what it’s like to you go on the Autobon and an E395. But at the same time, like it’s just a really really long journey. I do still dream of buying a car in Europe and driving it around though. Like buying a 550 Marinella and driving it around for like in Italy would be unbelievably cool. Um, and a Euro market one that’s less expensive. So, I don’t know. We’ll we’ll see. That dream lives on. But for now, I’m going to go experience Europe. Well, regardless, either way, Canon is grabbing life by the horns more than Fippo. An X3 M. What did you say? 50i. Is that mean this? It does indeed. I didn’t realize either. I had one my review on it. It’s coming up. I had one in the office. That was an X3 M50. It’s actually a pretty quick car. It’s just It’s no It’s no E395, you know. No, of course not. I don’t expect We’re all Hey, you know what? It happens every time. Every time I go to Europe, I think I want to rent something cool and then I end up in a V220D and I scrape the driver’s side door and a parking curb. I I I really assume it was the passenger side because that makes way more sense, but okay. Yeah. Yeah, it was the passenger side actually. Uh okay. But I’ve done drivers, too. If you’re a fan of Cool Cars, I racing and this podcast, you’ve got to check talk cars segment which is uh directed at Kenan. Kennon, the level to which I have destroyed the convertible Gwag on this uh uh excursion has been really quite something. And um in fact, currently we have a little game going on with my children where I’ve offered them a prize if they can find the power mirror switch, which was removed by my dog when he jumped over the center console uh in one of his many times that he’s jumped over the center console coming off of the sand. Uh, the power wooden mirror switch still missing. The top is having trouble going up and down. Not because it has an issue, but because the switch for the top has gotten so much sand inside of it that it it won’t depress fully. And so when you push it to close the top, it can’t go down all the way. So you end up having to lift up the I have so I have sand in places in the car. Here’s another one. Every time the top comes like back on, sand is dumped on your head. I don’t even know how it’s possible that there’s still sand in the top, but cuz you know it sits like this. So the sand gets in it and then it goes like this and then sand like pushes down into your into your face. It also hasn’t rained here in weeks and weeks and weeks and so the car is dirtier than on the outside than I’ve ever seen before. Ever. Uh what do you what do you think? Well, like as Tavvarish knows, you can never fully get rid of sand. Um but I knew that. Um, but that I mean, so let me ask you, it the defender was kind of built for this. It was built to get dirty, built to get the leather, by the way. That’s the other thing. The leather destroyed. I got like maybe one more summer of leather. You know, you should have it redone in neoprene um or something like that. Can I ask you a question? What is uh Kevin going to charge me to uh do this to get this car? How much you got? I’ve also driven through Tidal Ponds. Oh, cool. And tidal ponds is is brackish. It’s salt water. Yeah, it must be I the underside of that thing must be getting We treated it. We treated Oh, good. You’re good. You’re good. I’m glad you’re using the vehicle as intended. I I am too, to be honest with you. That was the intent. No. No other convertible G Wagon has ever been on sand, first of all. Yeah. Or used by children. Do you think it’s Do you think Kevin’s going to charge me a thousand? Kevin’s going to charge me $1,000. I think that’s light. Yeah. I mean, he’s got to vacuum out the top switch and he’s got to put the top up and like put it he’s got to clean inside where it I mean, you’ve got a lot of sand. This sand is from last year. I in fact the the the the sun visor mirrors are filled with sand and I’ve never understood quite why and and but they always have been and not always, only since last summer. And so I I think that’s I I don’t need him to fix that. I just I’m good there. It’s so peaceful to me that it’s not my vehicle. I don’t have to deal with this. This is not my problem. It actually it it it’s gotten progressively worse, of course, over the summer. And I don’t really care. We go to the beach every day and bathing. The other night we had to the other night we drove for some function. We wore nice clothes and got in the car and I’m like, “Oh my god.” Oh, it was only when I got in the car with like with like nice pants and like a nice belt and nice shirt that I’m like, “This is so terrible. This is like completely unacceptable.” That is so funny. It it is it always makes a car feel more dirty when you wear nice clothes to be in it. That is such an interesting observation. That’s so true. Anyway, I don’t know what to do, but I um I uh it’s it’s it’s it’s rough, you know. Yep. Spent three months on the stand in the sand. Going to spend a month in the shop getting clean from being on the sand. And the other thing about it that’s interesting is I am at 99,940 miles. Wow. It’s going to happen. I’m going to hit I’m going to hit 100,000 miles off road. Wow. Cool. Do you are you going to line it up with a special place or is it just going to happen? No. Oh, and honestly, I probably won’t be off-road. I with the children, you just we’re just we’re just surviving. We’re just doing our best. We’re just making life work here, you know. Uh I bought it at 78,000 miles, driven 22,000 m. Uh okay, we got to talk about the Ken, by the way, I want you to see it. I want you to see it how it is. I want you to see it how it is before it gets clean so you can feel what this would be like. We We’ll We’ll film it. We’ll we’ll include it as a clip somewhere. This was at one point a $200,000 car. I think about that every time you send pictures of it. I’m like, man, once upon a time. You think that shot that did the the carb uh legality knew that it would someday be on the East Coast driving on sand, getting sand in the power mirror switch. I’ll tell he didn’t. I’ll bet he wouldn’t have thought about that. My car bases is so low in that car that part of I I I don’t care. Like part of it is like, well, we’ll clean it and the thousand bucks in detailing is nothing compared to what it what it’s gone up. It’s like how Fippo thinks about his house. Uh, okay. Or my or my GTI. We got to move on to the market report. The market report. The market report. Now, the market report is brought to you by Cars and Bids. The best website. Yeah. Ever. Period. Yep. We have auctions. We have a community section. It’s great. Yeah. No, no, no. We don’t need it, Ken. Don’t cheapen it. It’s like those art galleries that only have one painting right in the center. You don’t We don’t want to throw a bunch of stuff around the edge, which is the best website ever. All right, Kenan, tell us about the E9. You have the So, we recently I mentioned that we were selling it. We have an E9 BMW 3 liter CSL, better known as the Batmobile, that was on Cars and Bids, and it sold for $381,000, which is strong money for an E9 Batmobile. Now, so our competitors have sold them to, but the which the nearest one they sold to this was, you know, same year, same spec, had the stripes, had the wing and all that. And this car sold for substantially more than that. And it makes sense. This car was very nicely restored. I believe it’s going to a museum in Canada. It uh and it is it was a magnificent car, but I am very proud of the result that we brought on this car for a number of reasons. One is that like to have a car like this on Cars and Bids is tremendously special for us and it’s an honor to have a car that is so historically important on the site. This isn’t just some special like it’s not just a BMW is gave this car gave birth to the M division which is very cool. Number two is I think that the content we made on it was great. Uh I’m not just saying cuz I was in the video. I think the entire team Sean our producer Sandon our editor and Matthew who filmed it with us all did an incredible job. If you haven’t watched it yet, truly incredible. It’s it’s in there somewhere. Yeah, there it is. Um, and I’m I’m very proud of the the work we did with that and I think that that helped us achieve this result. Uh, but also the thing I think about the most is like we haven’t been selling cars from this era for that long. Like this is a pretty we’re we’re early in our days of this and they’re bring this car brought very serious money a very competitive result that any auction house would be thrilled to have. And I I think it underscores how far this company has come in five years in a pretty short period of time from when we launched it sitting out on your patio socially distanced from one another during co to selling a Batmobile on the site. Like that’s a pretty great trajectory. So I’m I’m very thrilled with this result. Uh I’m happy for the the next owners and I hope lots of people get to see it in the museum it’s going to. It’s it’s it was a special car and thrilled honor I feel honored to have had it on the site. Thrilled to have driven it and I’m really happy with the result. I mean incredible car, incredible video. Sorry. Go ahead. We I agree with all that and and I echo all that and I think I I’m thrilled at the result. I was thrilled to have it. I I and I think the video was great and I’m very impressed. And what a bidding war at the end. It was so much fun to watch. It was a wild. It went almost $200,000 in the last two hours and something like $150,000 in the last few minutes. Yep. I truly insane. Uh I was walking through the Midway airport with my phone. I was on a on a call on like a work call and I just had my phone out watching every single bit come in. Man, imagine if you’re imagine if you’re flying out of Chicago and and you walk you’re walking through the airport and there’s Felippo like head down on freak out you know my the person sitting next to me on my plane from Chicago to San Diego was watching like car reels on his phone like I like sat down and there’s like a 911 and some then he flipped the next one some other car thing and then a cars and beds one came up and he’s like wait yeah yeah like Good. Yeah, of course. We We chatted for like half an hour. It was great. Oh, you don’t have that chat until the end. I then had to do work when we reached 10,000 feet, so we’re good. This is This is one person who’s gotten recognized for 10 years on the street talking to you who’s who’s now becoming truly f coming into the fame I always knew you deserved, right? Uh wait till the end to have the conversation. No, the kid the the person I talked to was very nice. Uh we had a great conversation about cars. They’re not always. Sometimes it’s awkward, you know. Kevin will tell you. Yeah. I’ve most of the time everybody’s been nice to me. I did I I’ve only been recognized in the airport a handful. I said more than I thought. But there was there was the most memorable. There was a kid who sat next to me who was like, “You make videos on YouTube. You you know, Doug.” I was like, “Yes, I do.” And he was a very sweet kid. I think that was from Denver back or something like that. Uh but going back to the CL, I mean, incredible car. Incredible result. I mean, $100,000 above the most recent close comp, which is which is crazy. Uh, over 100,000 views, something like 3,000 watchers, a ton of comments. Also, the level to which the comments were true Batmobile experts were crazy, right? Like people got deep on who rebuilt the seats and how that one guy rebuilt them differently than this other guy. Like that that there’s true knowledge in that in those 339. That’s happening. That’s happening more and more. the cars that are special that we’re getting. We’re getting more and more people who really really know the cars and understand the market and are and are true market experts. Um, and it’s great to get their input on stuff like this. It’s it’s that one of the values of our community. It’s it’s nice to see them resonate with with the cars and and bring their knowledge to it. Yep. On the subject, I want to talk briefly about the F8 because I was pretty impressed. Uh, speaking of $381,000 car sales, right? Uh, we sold an F8 for 391, right? Yeah. Yep. 391. Um, hey, what would you rather? Yeah, that’s Yeah. Well, you know, I don’t know. I I’m I’m I’m not an old car guy as much. I’d be into the F8, but I what that’s actually one of the reasons I wanted to bring this up, which is when I when the F8 came out, I remember the internet and Kenan telling me turbocharged crap. Nobody wants a turbo. It’s not It’s not a real It’s not naturally aspirated. They’ve ruined the whole thing. No, that was that was the 488 I said that about. They’re holding big. Yeah. Well, okay. It’s the same. I mean, the concept is the same. These things are holding big. Aren’t you surprised about that? I am surprised. I guess it I mean, I guess it kind of makes sense. I mean, it’s it really I mean, I know the 296 carries on the torch from the lineage of these cars, but this is it for the non-hybrid, you know, V8 Ferraris. Like I we have eras that we mark off with with the V8 Ferraris and like the the dual clutch was one when the 458 came along. That was a huge change. I think this marks the end of that sort of lineage to now we switch to I mean now you have the 296 and it’s hybrid in V6. And so this is the end if you want the more not analog but more how do I say this? Pure I guess Ferrari. Uh I have to say I stand by it. I think it is one of the most usable unusable cars I’ve ever driven. and it drives like a normal car at low speed and it blows your head off at high speed. Um, but it is a Yeah, I think that’s why I I I am kind of surprised at the result, but I’m happy that they’re holding strong. Um, it’s a special car. By the way, the week prior we sold a different F8 Spider also for strong money uh that had a little bit more miles, but nevertheless, yes, those two results are strong. The the F8 is still has still got the mojo. It’s not that old, and they’re not selling for dramatically less than 296s, which is interesting. Um, I think it’s a cool car. I think that was a good result also. And it’s I just wanted to highlight that even though we were told that the Ferrari is crashing down and the 458 was the last true one and blah blah blah, the market doesn’t agree. And almost $400,000 for this four-year-old, uh, that’s that’s real money. I mean, those those cars are still setting a strong market. Um, surprising. I will give you I will give you one thing to discuss. What do you want to discuss? Yeah. Okay. I like want to talk about the excursion. We had an excursion live the other day. Yeah. It was a wild automobile. I did. And crazy. Okay. So, this was a Ford Excursion that was converted in 2001 to an an armored by Becker into like an an armored limo build. Uh, and they had an insane amount of money put into it. 200 something thousand. I I think I added it up close to $300,000 in work in 2001 to make it armored and a and a limo. And now it has 19,000 miles. and it fails to meet reserve at $74,000, which by the way is what a regular 7.3 excursion with $18,000. No, I’m not. It just like this served such a specific purpose for whoever had it commissioned in 2001, but who’s the buyer now? You know, I I would also argue that it was a failure because they didn’t get shot. They didn’t get shot at. I get to use it. Just because you have a a a Rolex Sea Dweller that can go down 4,000 ft or whatever. That doesn’t mean you use it that way. It’s like they want to know that it We have different opinions about this. I’m still looking for my power mirror switch cuz I’m off road every day. This guy didn’t do enough to get shot. He thought he did enough to get shot. If I had a Rolex sea creature or whatever you said, I would go Yeah. Yeah. That I would drive. I would dwell in the sea. I would take my sea critter and I would drive dive down and and get that that uh sea urchin under the water. Yeah. All right. My favorite part, by the way, is that it was then service at Portland Courtesy Ford in Portland, Oregon after it got converted. And I wonder I wonder what just cuz it was initially it doesn’t look that crazy, but when you go in to service that, you got to tell them they can’t put it on a lift. Yeah. I mean, it weighs an insane. I It’s such a cool car. Like incredibly incredibly cool car. People were going crazy over it in in in the comments and viewing this auction. I I just the value to the person that built it is so significant, but the value to anything anybody else, it’s a weird car to sell. It’s kind of a famous thing about bulletproof cars. We’ve actually taken quite a few shots on bulletproof cars on the site. I don’t know that we’ve ever sold one. Um, bullet bulletproof cars are Yeah, bulletproof car unlike the fellow who own this one. Bulletproof cars are you don’t want to buy one you right like that’s it’s like a mattress like you don’t want to take a risk on something like that. You know what I mean? Like like if you if you really need a bulletproof car. The last thing you really want is to be like, “Yeah, I I’ll buy I’ll buy somebody else’s used one that I hope was done right.” Look, we sold that Escalade. Was that armored? Yeah, but I think a different level of armoring. I don’t know the various levels. They’re level sol. Oh my goodness. The back of that Escalade. Wow. Well, that’s what they have to do because of the because of the um the the rear window. I learned this when I reviewed that 300 series Land Cruiser and went to that armoring place in Northern Virginia. There’s a lot to it. Go to photo three or look at that. You have to do that because there’s such an open space there that they basically have to put in like an armored panel in between. Yeah. Crazy. On the windows like cuz the guy we know who works their camera at that one was talking me about the window regulars cuz they want the windows to be able to go up and down in order to do that because the bulletproof glass is so thick. this like it like the engineering it takes to make it look like a normal car and function like a normal car after you’ve done this is for for companies that do it right is really expensive and hard but the used market doesn’t really reward them I agree with you full what do you do with stuff like this it’s not like a it’s not like some cool like SEMA build like it was made for a purpose for someone who really needed it and now it’s just tough to justify someone who wants an armored car does not want to pay crazy money for a 23-y old Ford excursion and there are cars that retain their value SEMA built I will also say if you are at a A if you are worried about being shot for some actions you’ve taken, there’s a good chance you’re also willing to invest a lot of money in preventing that from happening. Right. That’s right. Willing and able. Now, I do want to know why they had it done in Portland. Do you Fippo, do you think that’s the car you would least be likely to buy on Cars and Bids? That Oh, god. No. I’m into it. Uh, pull up. Uh, it’s time for questions. The questions are brought to you by Cars and Bids. The greatest. the greatest done. Not just website. Now, if you want to ask questions, you go to carsandbids.com. You click on the community tab. Kenan makes a post every week. Kenan himself does it and it says, “Ask us your questions.” And then we you can ask us and then we’ll answer them. This week is one of my fa some of my favorite questions we’ve ever had in my life. Uh and I’m gonna I’m gonna I’m gonna answer them. I am Kenan and Filippo. Okay. We begin with a first question from Eric 44. This is going to be a quick one because I’ve given this a lot of thought over the last 20 years. Filipo, get out of here. Uh, first question is, you’re making Back to the Future, but the Delorean is repl it’s a modern era. The Delorean is replaced by a quirky modern era car. What replaces it? And what uh quirk stands in for Gwing Doors? I think the answer is the Fisker Karma replaces it. I I’ve always felt that the Delorean was sort of a like Morabun, stillborn, you know, but weird like American like it’s perfectly and and it’s also built in Europe, which the Delorean was too. and it’s got all these these it’s like a perfect modernday Delorean and and then it and then it died and and it only was one model etc. Um but I don’t know the quirk perhaps uh perhaps the quirk would be uh every company that has tried uh to sell that vehicle has failed and there’s been multinisk design. Don’t you think that Fisker Karma is the Delorean of the modern era? Yeah, somebody in the comments there said Chevy SSR, which has something to it, something to that. But I think you’re right on the parallels working for the the Fisker made a time machine out of Yeah. out of a car. You don’t think it would be a time machine? I I mean I I guess I I can’t come up with this as well. Cybertruck, you know what the other parallel is? It would struggle to reach 88 miles an hour. Yeah. Eco for uh Cyber Cybert truck is is there and our producer has like thrown up his hands multiple times now until we talked about the Cybert truck. The Cybert truck though isn’t the same thing. The Delorean was more abundant. You need to understand it was more abund. But but this also is has a body of brush stainless steel. Yeah, but that’s not the same thing. That’s not the same thing. The Cybertruck is is is more popular. That would have been like in the 80s using like a 308 like the well-known or a Countach like a well-known thing that was already capturing the public. The Delorean everyone agrees was made exciting because of its existence in the movie like the Fiser Karma would owe its life to the movie if it was in it. And it’s more abundant people. The the Lexus RZ. There you go. No, that’s stupid. It’s a car you want to draw attention to. Nobody knows it exists. There you go. Oh, RZ is pretty bad. Okay. Uh, next question. This is one’s for Kenon. Uh, and and I got two things to say about this question. First off, the question itself. PC Racer. Hey guys, at what age would you let your children drive your cars? I’m 25 and my dad lets me drive his 488, but he knows I wouldn’t risk doing anything stupid on the road. Uh, because it would affect my career, which took years to study for. I think that this person just wants to brag that his dad has a 488. It’s not much of a brag, although I think it is. Uh, nonetheless, the question is a good one because I I’m curious what your response would be. Kenan, let’s pretend you and Emily had children and they’re running around little little Cananano and Kini. What um when would you let them drive the beloved M5 that they were presumably conceived in, brought back from the hospital in at least? Um, I Oh, really? You would put a the the car seat will create a little Well, I mean, I would put I would put something down. That’s not safe. Well, uh I think the I don’t know. It’s a it’s a it’s a good question. Um I think when if you grow if you have I didn’t grow up in a car household. My dad wasn’t into cars. Um so it was like the idea of growing up and like if your kids are interested in cars, sharing the hobby with them, if they genuinely grow up around it and like respect the cars and stuff like that, I can definitely see it happening. I I think that like like everybody in my life, I would imagine my kids would be terrified to drive the car. I’m not terrified to drive your car. No one wants the No one wants the respons, but I’m not terrified. I’ll drive it. I’ll drive it. If I crash it, I’ll give you the 13850 that it’s worth. The last time Doug drove one of my cars, he drove it onto a sidewalk, but you know. Well, I’d rather Well, I have a picture of him in the driver’s seat on the sidewalk in the car. That’s all I That’s all I say. Um, but no, I I I think at some point like I can see like I could see like my kids drive the car. My dad has driven the car without me in it on a couple of occasions. He’s I took it to get his haircut once when I first got it and he just I was like, “Yeah, go take the M5.” And he did. Would you let me drive the car? Under what circumstances? Cur GT. I have a Cur GT. It cost a million dollars. I know, but it it would almost it would almost be easier to get another K2 than it would. Well, not to your The thing about both of us is your service level. God Well, to replicate the level of service comments again, but you always do, so it’s fine. No, that’s that’s a fair it’s fair. No, I know you have all these really expensive cars and all all of my friends have really expensive cars, but everybody seems afraid to to drive the M5 because of how significant it is in my life. And and it’s like to replace it is like I would have to buy one with that level of servicing and most of the parts to do that are no longer available. So like it would be really hard to replace. So that’s that’s why most people are afraid to use it. But I would let my kids drive it and I would let you drive it. He’s dancing around it. But the answer is never. He won’t even let his adult automotive enthusiast friends who I will but they don’t want to. Nobody wants to. I used to drive it. Let me drive it. I want to drive it. Oh, I want to do 11. As long as I can drive the Countach. What? Once Kenan passes away and it’s in probate, then at that point they will have to drive it. Doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter. What’s What’s your answer? You actually have children. Oh, I’ve never really given it thought, but it doesn’t seem like my kids are going to are going to be that interested. Uh, but I don’t, you know, I don’t know. Like, I’m not letting my kids drive the the cars are incredibly valuable. What What are we trying to let kids drive cars? Geez. Yeah, I think you would at some point if they had an expression. Maybe. I don’t know. It’s It’s definitely not on my mind. I’m just I’m trying to get through them. I’m trying to get through each morning. That’s my goal with my children right now. The thing they would learn about you is that you are the worst backseat driver I have ever experienced in my entire life. It is so distracting. You go to shift gears like, “Wow, you’re shifting there. You should use more rails.” “Wow, you’re revving it too much. You’re going too fast. You’re not going fast enough. What are you doing?” It’s he’s awful. Most I want to be clear. It’s rarely about like your speed. It’s usually about the engine speed. I usually really get on you about gear shifts, but only because I know that you um hate it. I don’t Filippo notoriously shifts at 40 RPM, and I I don’t know. I don’t tell him anything about his driveway is 6 feet long, and by by foot number four, he’s in third gear. So, uh Okay, next question. Next question from Open Smacks. It’s probably Opensmax, but I’m going to say Open Smacks. Question for Doug. Of the cars in your cars and bids bids history, which are you most relieved you did not win and which are you most disappointed? Kenet, pull up my bid history. All right, so go down in my bid history. What have I bid on? 93 Turbo, Stradman Supra, a 612, two smart crossblades, that Focus ST transit connect Hummer V. Hummer V is definitely the one I’m most relieved I didn’t win. Um V that 2500 Suburban assemble. you I I hope you regret not buying that 2500. Okay. Definitely the one that I’m most relieved I didn’t win is the Hummer EV. Although I didn’t put in a serious bid. I think the one that I wish that I had won the most is the uh smart crossblade. I mean I still think about those cars pretty regularly. Cool. Yeah, those are so cool. Although I would love a 93 turbo. That one was a little little bit too modded for me. But I want a smart crossblade. Don’t we all? Don’t we all? Uh okay, next next question. This is the hardest question we’ve gotten. Ken, me and you. from Neon Espresso. Now, it should be espresso, but it’s espresso. If you No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. The neon express was, if memory serves, a trim level of the neon. I’ll tell you what. I’ll tell you what I’ll do. Wait a sec. It was neon. The espresso was the trim. Espresso. So, we got to give Neon espresso credit. I thought it was espresso this whole time. This has really gone wild. That is deep. Next question. Next question from Neon Espresso. If you had to replace Ken, this is very hard. If you had to replace all of your cars with brand new ones, meaning cars currently on sale, new and 25, what would your choices be? I know mine 25 SEOA 25 E-Class station wagon. After that, it gets murky. Kevin, what do you got? After that, it gets murky. Um, uh, I don’t know. I need a second to come back to that. Probably M3. Don’t you think non-mp M3? Yeah, probably manual M3 would be great. I wish I’d get it in a wagon, but that would actually that’s the correct answer. Yeah, the V the V Blackwing is the car I would choose. Uh Filippo, I don’t think anybody’s interested in your answers. And mine uh would be hard. What’s still available with the three pedals? Anything? 911s. Yeah, I’d get a 911 ST. ST. Yeah. Uh I’d get a Well, that that Gordon Academy car and anything else? I’d get the electric G Wagon instead of there’s no convertible. You take it to Newport Convertible Engineering. They’ll make one for you. There you go. You can still get sand in it. Manual sports cars. Are there still any others that I’m not thinking of that are like in that range? I guess like a boxer spider maybe, but that’s not on the on sale anymore. No, it’s tough. Tough for me. I I wouldn’t I wouldn’t be entirely thrilled with a lot of Porsches. It’s a It’d be a lot of boring Porsches. What about What would replace the Countach? That’s the thing. I don’t know. The new not the new Countach shortly. Also, that’s a year old. That’s fine, right? Yeah. It doesn’t count. I don’t know. It’d be tough. So, I’ I’d get a 911 ST and I’d get the Gordon Marray Academy and then I’d be out of cars. Now, this leads us to our next question from the Stig 11. It’s a three-word question aimed at Kenon. Three-word question. Okay. Enzo or MC12? Oo, one’s longer. So, well, no, technically two are longer. There are two lengths of the MC12. A long one and a longer one purported, but no one’s ever seen two MC12s next to each other, so we nobody will confirm. Uh longer regardless, right? Like it would still be the Enzo for me really. Uh cuz I The Enzo is is such a I’ve been looking a lot at that car recently, like pictures and stuff. It is crazy. The MC12 is also not particularly usable. You’re the only person I know who’s driven one, Doug. But I mean, you no visibility out the rear of that car. Like it’s just the Enzo you can kind of use as like a car a little bit. I’m going to tell you something and I just want to say it and you take it how you want. When I was driving the MC12, I wasn’t looking behind me. Yep. I knew that’s exactly what you were going to say. Kelsey Priest. I think it ends up doors go up. It says Ferrari on it. Yeah. I will say though, the MC12 has a radio. Oh. Oh, that windows and power windows. Well, which would you choose? Does that change your mind? No, I think I like the Enzo more. Which would I choose? Man, I would love to have one of those cars. I spent the last 25 years hating how the Enzo looked. And in the last 6 months, I’ve come around to it. Honestly, it was when you showed that Enzo in Monaco in my video just just 30 minutes ago. I think that was it. That was the moment. No, I’m into the Enzo, but I think how do you not get an MC12? You’d flex on everybody. Flex on. That’s true. But I mean, it’s not like that. Although that’s a model. It’s not like that isn’t a flex on everybody. Yeah, that’s still pretty good. And I think that for a car that design that is 22 years old now, that still looks just as cutting edge. Whereas the MC12 looks funny to me. You know what you do, Kenon? You take the Enzo and you go to that place that Nick went to in Texas or wherever and you have it manual swapped. I’ve thought about that having one up there. Like, can you imagine what that would be like? I was thinking about that recently. The MC12 is also a good looking car. You know what you do with the MC2 large? You know what you do with the MC12, Kennon? You you get one and then you take it to that place where Nick went in Texas or wherever and you get it manual swapped. You know, I was thinking about that recently. Yeah, I think that All right, I got we got we got two more questions. Two very very short questions that that they’re more. Uh they’re both great. Oh, no wait, three more three more good ones because two will go through really quick from number one from the Mishka. Given your conversation about the manual Cayenne, do you think Porsche would be successful if it sold a manual Macan today? Could it capture the population of former WRX wagon owners who are now older, richer, and more refined? The answer to that is no, but no circumstances at all, but it would be successful in the secondary market 15 years from now, but but only for a third of its value. Listen, the manual is successful, but only at 25 grand being sold to car nerds. Like, that’s not a car they ever should have made. And I don’t even think it probably was a success at the time financially. I don’t know. I can’t imagine it was two more from Oliver C9 for Filippo. If you had to buy a car right now on Cars and Bids, what would it be and why? Get out there. Get out there. Come back to this answer. We discuss this every single week on the live now section for on the Carsmith YouTube channel. Give us give us it. Give us it. I’m scrolling. Don’t you think it’s that? I want the Earth ROR. I do love the Earth R. The Earth Rubber is the coolest car we’ve ever had on Carson B. Like it’s like a truly elite level of Earth. It’s too big. Get We have a Boxer Spider live now and we also have a C7 with a stick live now and we also have a 550 with a stick live right now. Is it not that 300 CRT8 convertible? Seriously? No question. It’s not. It’s not. Absolutely not. Uh it would be wagon. Can I give you four cars that we have live right now that I want? Sure. Like can I pull them up quickly? All right. We have a 2016 Boxer Spider. Yep. Which is the next car. It’s a good car. It is very similar spec to our friend’s hand. Good car. Uh we also have a uh it’s in New Orleans. It’s in Yes. Uh we also have a 550 Marinella which I also want. I do love the 550. Yep, it is. Uh we have a really nice E46 M3 comp. Really? Really? That’s something you would The 2006. That’s something you That’s a special car. I I agree that it’s a special car. I would want it for you. And then last but certainly not least, we have a Saab 93 2.0 T Sport combi with a stick. So basically, basically, Ken, what what Filippo did there was he promoted three very special cars that he wanted people to see and then he told us what he actually wants to get. No, it’s not the one I actually most want, although I consider bidding. Uh, right. That’s exact. You pick. Yeah, cuz if they’re cars I like, it’s probably not really you want your I the Boxer Spider and the A46M3 have my eye right now. The boxer spider we did agree on was that in that video we incredible. Yeah, lovely car. Last question comes to us from Badger Man and it’s a very good question. If you could change the spec of your car for free, what would you pick? Kenan, start off. Color. Avis blue with a two-tone full leather sport interior. Uh what’s Avis blue? I don’t remember what Avis blue is. Avis blue was the predecessor to lemon. It was the slightly earlier. Um slightly darker. Do you like Avis better than Lama? Yes, I do. It’s a little bit rarer. Um I don’t know if it up down to the left. There you go. Far left. This one? Yeah, this was a rough carb. I think this was L. No, this one was Avis. That is a ignore the awful wheels. Um but I mean Havis absolutely terrible. But there, that’s a good one. Is that like stock there? Yeah. Avis blue. Yeah. And then the two-tone full leather sport interior which they offered only for the 2000 model year. Um this was the spec that I wanted. I actually made an offer on a car that was the spec and it just didn’t work out numbers wise. And then I found my car was in like nicer condition overall. But still that’s the dream. Blue is the one. Fippo. Uh and the GTI it’ be really nice to have keyless entry or it has a key fob but it’d be nice to have the thing. That’s it. Would you do a spectrum color? change the color of any of your cars. No, I love the wagon color. Mocha black is a great the ziggno color. You wouldn’t want red with white wheels for the uh the the Fiat’s the right color. It’s not my favorite of bar color, but it’s works. The the GTI I would prefer that color. That’s the whole crux of the question. Yeah, but like it works. The gray is better, but I the white white wheels white wheels is the best color. That’s also true. But I I like the black, especially after Ken cleans it. The GTI I don’t care about color spec. Okay, I’m going to give you a Sean take for me. Oh god, my cars are the best spec. Yeah. No, choose the press colors. But except for Well, the Countach technically isn’t. It should have a white interior. That would make it the best. Yeah. Although the white interiors, the more car Countaches I see with white interiors, they keep coming up. They are the white interiors age so badly and you end up having to do full interior replacements. It’s It just looks like white leather after 40 years just starts to look gross. Like it people getting in and out. It’s just gross. It’s like truly like Yeah, it it cracks and it and then the cracks get color colored and it it yellows and it browns and it’s just not an attractive situation. The only one I disagree with is your wagon. I don’t love the interior color. Yeah. I wish I hadn’t gotten a white interior. Didn’t consider any of that before the whole thing happened, you know. What about the Ford? you’d put the base wheels on the Ford GT. Um, yeah, but if I, you know what, Kenon, if I would do that, I could. Like, they come up for sale and it’s like a $20,000 price difference, but I never have. So, I guess I wouldn’t, you know, sitting here like, “Oh, I like the base wheels.” Well, okay, do something about it then. The Ford I it’s taken me an enormously long amount of time to come around to the colors on all these cars. Um, I wanted a Heritage Ford GT for a long time. I wanted white for a long time. I would probably if I had to change the 4GT colors, I’d probably change to white with blue stripes like that one there. Um, however, the market loves blue with white stripes, which is what I have. In fact, it’s the second hottest color after uh Heritage in terms of pricing. So, I guess and and I I’ve grown to like it. The CuryT I’m like a deep silver convert. It is the only color I’m interested in, and I think that brown is the best interior. Uh, I wanted yellow for so long, and now I see yellow ones, and it’s just a little much. Um, the Countach white is just like how it has to be. Uh, the Sequoia and Mercedes I did buy new and the Gag’s got to be silver. I got no regrets. You should regret the white interior. But you know what? It’s the dog, not the kids, which is a surprise. It’s the dog, not the kids. The dog has ruined that interior. I don’t know what I’m going to do. Charge me a bunch of money to fix that, too. Tough noodles. Worth it. Uh, okay. Do we have any Kenan, do you have any final parting thoughts? You’re gone for a month. I’m gone for a month and uh I will miss you all very much. I will certainly be checking in and listening to the podcast when I can. Um but nonetheless, I I hope to have a wonderful trip. I can’t wait to, you know, bring stuff back from Europe and tell you stories and it’ll be great. Can’t wait to see you all again. Listen to the podcast when you can. I got stuff I’m doing. I’m I’m Look, you’re driving out of Lake Como and you call me and I look at the phone, I’m going to go put it back down. Okay. When was the last time I called you? I a long time. It’s been an absolute pleasure. Filipo, you got anything any any interesting? No. Safe travels to Europe. Enjoy. Send me photos of Fiat Pandas 4x4s in Lake as many as I can. They’ll be easy. I’m jealous that um you’re gone for a month. That would be nice. Uh all right, everyone. We’ll see you. We’ll see you later. Who’s filling in? Is Nick filling in? Nick is filling in. And I’m sure you’ll have to cut out some LWD stuff that he says. That’s I’d expect nothing less. All right. Absolute pleasure. Best podcast we’ve ever done. Filipo. Goodbye everybody. Goodbye. Goodbye. [Music]
