MG Cyberster – The Flawed But Fun Attention Grabber!
we’ve always said for years that when you get the niche genres of cars turning up in full electric version then they’ve arrived they’re more accepted and ultimately they’re not going anywhere so if you’re anti-EV and you’re on social media I’m afraid you’ve failed this is the MG Cyster it’s got two seats the roof comes down and like hot hatches they’re getting more and more common still very niche but they are here so let’s have a look at this because for me it’s very good-looking and it’s got something that will basically excite most people and has done since we’ve got this and that is of course all you will ever need scissor doors i mean we might as well just stop the review now there’s no point in showing you the rest of the car whilst we have the door open I might as well highlight a slight issue for when it’s raining like this which after 3 months of sunny and dry weather literally stopped the day this arrived on my driveway so I feel I should apologize for the weather going off uh it’s my fault essentially but do you know when it’s raining and you just run to your car and you slam the door shut so you don’t get wet through or the car wet through well you can’t do that with this you have to wait for it to do its thing i mean it looks cool i’m not bothered now the wind’s up so you’re a little wet but again minor minor niggle let’s take care of the looks now I think this is actually really good looking and I’m not the only person to think so because both of us have been stopped stopped many times whilst driving this or when it’s been parked and people have come over and said “Oh what’s that?” I love that especially when they see the doors as well although it is a little bit tempered when you tell them it’s a full electric MG it’s the bad snobbery thing isn’t it that’s the hardest thing that will have to cope with but it is a car that I think looks better when it’s stood still there’s a lot of people right now for for some reason I’m not sure removing the Tesla badge off Teslas and putting like Audi badges on it i don’t know what it is but it’s obviously a thing i reckon if you took that off and put an other badge on there an Audi maybe most people certainly a non-car person wouldn’t bat an eyelid and would just assume you bought an Audi it can pass for something a lot more expensive and although this isn’t cheap £55 to60,000 for how quick it is and for how much it typically costs for a a car of this genre and performance and and looks it’s actually not bad value at all it’s got a nice side profile it’s not too tall which is good for a modern car the charge door is right here but I think more importantly when it comes to its looks it’s all around the back now this for me has enough interest to fill the genre it’s going for it’s got all the right proportions it does for me a little bit feel like that they’ve got Bugatti Jaguar various other convertible manufacturers all the ones that are known for that stuck it in a blender sent it to China and this is what they’ve come with you got this convex style rear with the really nice diffuser going down there and the indicators are quite unique you’ll either hate that or you’ll love it now of course it’s got to accommodate the roof going down but the boot’s actually quite usable it’ll get golf bats in there for example it’s not exactly what you’d call the best shape but it’s quite long and it’s a decent size it’s just the opening might restrict things so you just get small bags or two or three small bags if you’re going anywhere cuz it’s not exactly going to be a daily you’re not going to do a major shop in this I suspect there’s not a lot of room to put the seat back so this is the angle we’ve got let’s start with the wet door card which is like a leatherrett material it doesn’t particularly feel high-end if I’m honest but it don’t feel cheap either you got the seat switches here yeah not the most expensive switch gear and it’s black gloss which I can I’m being picky now uh but it does swoop round to what is like a a triple screen affair in fact there’s four if you include that one and although it looks quite good and Gran Turismoesque there’s a lot of information this gets in the way a little bit and you never know where what you want is in terms of well the audio equalizers here this is how you do the stereo and things like that that’s obviously your speedo and various other car functions and this does the air conditioning and whatnot and then it does your seating and driving but why isn’t that in the settings folder up there
and then you’ve got this almost like an Xbox controller to move things up and down and here it’s okay more black gloss which I could live without you got some more haptic feedback buttons like your hazards and some more for the climate control so it’s nice having even they’re not physical buttons but there are some buttons this is how you open the doors in fact I’m going to do that now harry could you open my door and I’ll show something which is a little bit of a problem when the door opens when you got the wipers on auto it just floods the water inside i think we better close it again Harry so there’s a few little niggles little things isn’t there
but what do you think about the the whole build
you know it’s one of them where it’s not the best quality in the world but I keep telling myself it’s probably good value given the cost of the car i
mean the seat looks pretty swish

mind the design of it and it’s is it relatively comfortable
yeah I think it’s not too bad it’s not going to stay that color for
a better art i mean you probably have details around these bits here on either side wouldn’t you i think the thing is is that the vinyl does feel very vinally doesn’t it it’s not even pretend leather no it’s definitely vinyl
and I guess when you’re buying a car that’s meant to be special I would like to have a little bit something

oo full width at least there is a bit of storage as well back here there is
which will get a couple of um You’re going to get free three free probably three bags for life in there right small suitcase small suitcases yeah so they know their audience again this is not a daily driver but there is a few things which you have to get used to you know drive and neutral reverse that’s a bit strange but you know what i do like the fact that this is kind of wrapped around the driver the whole shape of it you know the screens this handle for you um

but doesn’t do wireless charging
it doesn’t and it wouldn’t do a bigger phone than this there is also more storage and oopsies under here
there’s nothing in the front there’s no front nothing at all it’s got flappy paddles but not for regen or not entirely for region so if you pull this it changes the drive mode so we’re in drive uh comfort the mode sport custom and of course if you press that super sport this paddle here does the regen or cur as it says energy recover level not available single pedal active oh one pedal drive then can you adjust it there we go look hey it’s like an F1 car is this thing one two three but you can only adjust it if that’s off again it’s a little confusing on the infotainment it is yeah it is a A little bit Android 6 isn’t it so an interesting car isn’t it that’s in comfort
comfort mode and we’re at 60 already in the wet and you know what any quicker than that would have been a bit silly in this weather

it’s got the performance
oh the brakes are really grabby
the one of them it goes regen regen regen through the windscreen who is buying this cuz I can’t see it being on the company car list is it literally the retired couple that wants a a fun runabout and the EV route because let’s face it the running costs are going to be pennies it’s electric if you charge at home and some people want that for environmental reasons i guess
I I do wonder i mean like I say whether it’s aimed at the older person who you know will know more about MG and their history of the you know smaller sportier cars i’ve been driving around and someone’s like you know pulled me out the side of the road and gone “What is it it’s amazing.” Did the first drop when you said it’s full electric MG from China
they didn’t know they were either hiding it pretty well or uh they was like “Wow what is it?” And then you open the doors of course that’s when they got Yeah
so it’s got a they’ve got wow
it’s got wow factor yeah it has
so that’s a big plus for me you know we keep saying it i think it’s one of those cars that looks better

there’s better yeah but I mean in terms of the driving enjoyment there’s better out there it’s okay but it’s not what I’d call a
I don’t want to take this on twisty roads however it’s a GT i mean this literally is the GT model so Grand Tourer would this be good around the North Coast 500
it would be very good on the North Coast 500
again it’s not a sports car is it it is a Grand Tour
and therefore at what a quarter of the price of the Maserati Fulgar
well I think this is it
and I think you’ll probably get more people looking at this maybe it’s the color that’ll do it with this and the doors but I think more people would be interested in this and with the Maserati Maserati is always one of those isn’t it where it’s a bit under the radar

i’m glad this exists it’s a Halo model they never They’re not aiming for mass production are they

I’m just glad it exists i’m glad that they went ahead with it they built something like this and you can actually buy it and you know all the crazy things about it they’ve kept hasn’t quite got the uh poise or the handling of something a bit more expensive you kind of feel the MG4 underpinnings
but it is definitely not an MG4 though is it in terms of that was well the X power version of that was we call it the nauseiator
yeah you did feel pretty sick after that
i feel this is actually a nice comfortable ride
yeah it’s it’s good to a good
even though it’s a soft top it is very quiet you get a bit of wind noise from the the roof well apart from that it’s not bad battery size it’s 74.4 which for a car this sort of size it’s a a bigish battery isn’t it
you can start to hear a bit of the obviously wind noise which is expected i mean it’s not It’s an EV but it’s a it’s got a convertible

even the back the wing mirrors are massive you know what again as we’ve said who’s going to buy this to know the audience easy to see with massive wing mirrors yeah yeah definitely and the thing I like about it as well it hasn’t got that image you know if you buy a BMW or an Audi or a Porsche even people in their mind have an image of what you’re like true
you buy an MG and people are going “I don’t really know what what’s an MG driver.”

it’s handy for you cuz you know when you’ve arrived i mean I get it’s a safety feature it’s not a bad one but I I I always think I want I want that one button that puts in custom mode that just switches everything off that I went off

so what it’s like over these bumps it’s not bad it’s a bit soft but
it’s GT it seems to carry on after you’ve passed over something

it’s a bit floppy isn’t it you know one one slight minor gripe that we’ve already mentioned which I’m feeling with the steering wheel

just feels lets it down a little bit doesn’t it if they made it I don’t know an Alcantara steering wheel or something it would just trans you’d feel at least as a driver that you’re in something just that little bit better

whereas some of the really fast EVs out there it’s like you feel I feel like I can push this to the limits of the environment might you know without worrying about crashing yeah it seems easy it’s easy to drive is what I’m trying to get across
there’s a bit of tire scrub then but

we’re getting 2.7 miles per kilowatt hour in the time in the hundreds of miles we’ve had this so 784 was it battery 7374 so let’s say 70 cuz you’re never going to use it all so 160 to 200 mile range mhm i think
cuz you don’t have to drive it like a lunatic
no no driving it uh I did reset the one of the trip computers earlier and I did get around four
four miles to get that out
yeah just taking it easy
so all right so let’s say 160 170 in winter 200 in summer but if you wanted to eek it out and drive economically like any car
yeah it’s like anything isn’t it if you put your foot down it’s going to use up a lot
so 180 as a year round average yeah yeah
which isn’t exactly efficient but what we what we expecting
yeah well you’ve got something that nearly weighs 2 ton and does 16 3.2 seconds yes and of course the rear wheel drive version is more efficient than this

so add another probably 20 mi on for that one
and I reckon that when this is 3 years old 25 well can you imagine
then it’s very appealing
it is at that price yeah really is what is this going for cuz it’s been out a little while let me have a look
so £50,000 for well the GT so that’s the most expensive so it’s gone from 60 to 50 and that’s a 74 wrench i mean it’s got vehicle to load on the Yeah
screen so that that for me is a bonus
because if you go camping in it yeah definitely yeah you can go camping in this roof roof down
it doesn’t do 11 or it basically you’ve only got 7 kW AC charging
not a major issue i don’t think certainly in the UK but does this bother you the maximum it can do in terms of rapid charging is 144 kW now the thing is bit of an issue but if it does that throughout the majority of the battery
38 minutes from 10 to 80% there there’s definitely better outlet yeah it’s not Do you know what it’s one of them I think it sums up the car where it’ll sort of do

i don’t think you’re throwing this round the track comes with a sevenyear warranty which yeah
granted it’s only 80,000 mi which is a bit strange
i don’t think you can do 80,000 mi in this
you’re not doing over probably five let alone 10,000 mi a year in this so then I’m going to land it on you what food is this

it’s the Chinese sort of make on a Christmas dinner so you’re getting like a hoisting duck instead of You’re having a Chinese at Christmas yeah but they’re doing it as you know like a Chinese Christmas dinner so instead of getting Yorkshire puddings you’re getting giant prawn crackers
and it’s like you’d still really like it and you go “This is amazing this.”
But it don’t feel like Christmas

so basically if you’re looking for a two-seater
especially with a something you can get the roof off
it’s fun it’s anything it’s brilliant

The MG Cyberster isn’t perfect but for a car in this genre, it’s price means you can forgive its shortcomings..
