MG S5 EV 2025 review: New Chinese electric small SUV replaces MG ZS EV to challenge the BYD Atto 3

The 2025 MG S5 EV isn’t a high-performance large car from Audi. Instead, it’s the popular Chinese brand’s next-generation replacement for the ZS EV small SUV, which was one of the first volume-selling fully electric vehicles in Australia. As such, the S5 EV find itself going tyre to tyre with the BYD Atto 3, Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric, among other rivals.

So, what does the new S5 EV bring to the table? Well, it’s closely related to the critically acclaimed MG4 small hatchback, with its rear-mounted electric motor producing a modest 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque. Two battery pack options are available, with the 49kWh delivering 415km of NEDC-rated driving, while the 62kWh unit can travel 515km between charges.

In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Laura Berry spends a week living with the S5 EV to find out how well it measures up in the real world.
