BYD Sealion 7 2025 review: New electric car looks to overtake updated Tesla Model Y family SUV

The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 could be the next big thing in Australia’s fully electric mid-size SUV segment, which has long been dominated by the Tesla Model Y. Of course, BYD already sells a mid-size SUV, the Sealion 6, but it’s a plug-in hybrid, so the Sealion 7 is the zero-emissions alternative, albeit with a coupe twist.

So, what exactly does the new Sealion 7 bring to the table? Well, it’s launching with two grades, the entry-level Premium and flagship Performance, with the former offering 230kW of single-motor rear-wheel drive, while the latter ups the ante with 390kW of dual-motor all-wheel drive. Both options come with an 82.5kWh battery pack, which enables a driving range in excess of 500km.

In this expert review CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton gets behind the wheel of the Sealion 7 at its national media launch to find out how well is measures up in the real world.
