The Hilux of the urban Indian motorscape.

This car was a contradiction unto itself. When we would visit from the US, it could handle 30 suitcases with ease as the roof was always a variable storage option. Yet it any more than 3 humans turned it into a rolling death trap.

Never once did I see one that didn’t require two different sets of keys as the doors were from donor cars which had different locks, which were different than the ignition. It could handle any hill but the roll down windows required Schwarzenegger strength to open.

The ac, while certainly present and containing buttons and controls was more of a nice placeholder. It was really good at blowing already hot air around the cabin.

It never saw speeds that required anything above 2nd gear, but its fuel economy was solid.

10” rims with beefy 11” tires.

But in the hellish warscape that is south Mumbai traffic, it took care of business and you always knew you could reliably get from point A to point B.
