INSIDE AMG | Active Safety – Bringing AMG’s to Their Limits and Beyond (2/2)
Today, we are at a top-secret proving ground in Spain where we will try to bring our AMGs to the limit. I can show you how I drive when I really test the worst case. And we can see what happens. That was crazy!
OK, that was pretty much worst case because I hit it pretty well there. We spend a lot of time in development, finding the car’s very specific spot: how we have to steer to hit that worst-case spot. Because someday, it might happen to some client
And we want to be absolutely sure that they will not flip the car. In this case, specially for you, we put the car into a special state: We put software on it from the very beginning of the development process, when we started testing all these things
And figuring out what we have to change. So, we put software on the final car to make sure this will not happen, but you can still have fun with it. Thanks a lot for that, I am feeling a little dizzy right now!
But it is good to know that this does not happen on the street. That is true. At AMG, we not only make sure it is safe, but also that you can have a lot of fun with the car. We want to keep it agile,
We want to give the driver as much fun as possible while still keeping it safe. Finding the sweet spot between both. Exactly, that is what we do. So, we are going to jump into the GT now. OK, let’s go! Catrin, this is the last test for you in the passenger’s seat.
So, what are we going to do now? You will see – we are just going to drive off and you will see. OK, let’s go! So, we are going “fast fast”. As fast as we can, basically. What was that?
This is an extreme version of the test we do to test the car’s high-speed stability. We do not usually do it when there is water on the track, so now it was a bit more extreme. This is basically how we check that the car is going to be stable,
No matter what customers try to do at high speed. And when it becomes unstable, it is controllable. This was the extreme version with stability control off. You could feel that the car moves a lot, but is controllable: you can catch it. So, you make sure that the beast is tameable.
Exactly. We make sure you can have fun even at high speed, but it is controllable. What aspects of the car do you pay attention to during this manoeuvre? Obviously, the faster we go, the more important aerodynamics become. You have more airflow. Especially in the GT, we have the active aero –
The active spoiler at the rear. In the front, we have a movable lip; it moves out at higher speed, giving the car more stability. Other important things are the base setup of the car, like the suspension setup, everything, including tires. You have the very high performance tires with a lot of grip,
And then slicks, and you have daily, street tires. Tires are always an important topic when it comes to cars. If you are interested in the topic of tires, you can check out the INSIDE AMG episode T, where we talk a lot about tires. OK, now we are going to move back to Hendrik
And look at some data that we measure during these tests. You will see some results we get. Perfect! Hendrik, what do we have here? Well, as we talked a lot about objective testing, I wanted to show you a few graphs of what we see while high-speed testing.
We are doing some tests at different lateral accelerations. Here you can see two graphs: One of a car that we do not like because we normally want the car to be agile at low speeds. And then the line should go down.
But here, you can see the yellow line goes up again, so that is not as good. The purple line actually goes down. It is pretty agile at low speed and then really decreases at higher speed. That is actually what we want.
After the high-speed testing, it is time for you to jump in the driver’s seat. I can’t wait. Perfect, then let’s go. This is our steering robot, we use it for some certification manoeuvres. Every car manufacturer has to do this manoeuvre, which is supervised by the certification organization.
This is a sine dwell manoeuvre – actually a lane change where the robot holds the steering angle for a couple of seconds. So that we can see the lateral deviation of the car. You have to reach a specific deviation to pass the test.
OK. So, do they drive it? Or are they in the car? No, our drivers drive the manoeuvre in the car’s most agile mode. The organization sits outside on a folding chair and sees if everything works out. Enjoying the show. Yes, right. So, what do I do? The test is pretty easy actually.
You set the speed limiter to 90 km/h and then just go straight. When you reach 90, press the green button on the left side. And then take your foot of the throttle, hit the dead man switch behind the steering wheel and just hold the handles. Please, do not grab inside the steering wheel!
Just stick to the handles and the car will do everything else by itself. Feels very weird, but I will try. It is not that hard, so… And nothing could happen, just start whenever you are ready. OK, let’s do it! Perfect! That was it. Well done! Yay! You could start working for us.
You think a career change would be good now? No problem, we always need good employees. So, whenever you feel ready, just come and join us. What a crazy experience! Thank you both so much for the day, I had a blast!
Our community has a better understanding of the effort that goes into active safety. We are glad that you were here and enjoyed the day. Now, you know what our team is doing, thanks for coming! Totally! Thank you and see you soon. You are welcome.
