MINI | Forever Young: The story of the Silver Sliders
It starts in the morning with checking the snow report. Even before coffee. And if there looks like there’s been a nice snowfall, we contact our friends and organise cars and rides up to the ski hill. I’m Joan Harvey, and I’ve been skiing for 50 years.
My name is Michael Brewster. I’m 78 years old. I’ve been skiing at least 75 years. Joan and I still ski five days a week. Locally we are known – or have been known – as the Silver Sliders. Our name started when we all bought silver skis.
But at some point, it was our hair colour that defined our name. Yeah, whitewater is special that way. Just the way it’s arranged. We can ski outside the ski area boundary and find our way down to a main road
Where we get picked up by one of our friends or one of our crew. And that’s made it possible for us to continue to push powder skiing for as long as we have. Right off the – right off the lift system. Now, what else do I need? Helmet. Helmet, mitts, – Radio.
Boots, radio. Okay, let’s go, man. Okay. I got my gear. Time to roll. And it’s still snowing and staying nice and cold. Staying cold. We’re good. We got Bud and Ken. They’re gonna meet us on the road. There they come. There they are, finally. Who is the first driver?
Oh, not me. Well, let’s get in and get some skiing done. Okay. There’s work to be done. We’ve been hanging around too long. Okay, I’ll see you down the road, you guys. Take care of the driver, we’ll see you there. Okay.
Old Bud, how many days have you skied? 79, according to the tally on the gun. But one day we were up here and the kids said: How many days have you got? And I say: Well, how many days have you guys been open? And he says: Well, 90!
I say: Well, then I guess I got 90. Oh, wow. Yeah, we used to come down over the top and straight through here. Remember those days, Joan? I do. We used to call it: see it and ski it. Yup. We’re on the road at 7-2. On our way.
Okay, I’m on the binding. Does it hurt too bad? Huh! My bum has gotten smaller since I retired. What did you use to say, Bud? Life’s no fun if you don’t have any. Yep. I’m sitting here for three hours. Hey, hey, hey. That’s good, Kenny Boy. Hi, Ken.
It was okay, it was okay, man. If you weren’t so old, we’d have taken you with us. Yeah. Okay. We’re good to go. One run down, ten more to go. Joan to Bud! Mike, did Bud go for another run? Oh, here he comes.
Oh. He’s not as the limber as he used to be.
Introducing the Silver Sliders. The members of this extraordinary ski crew are in their 70s, living their best life and skiing almost daily, when snow permits. Let’s get to know their good vibes and learn something about how to age in style.
