I usually call it out as the broader Italian look among japanese designers in the 80s and 90s. Strong body line and a curve but deliberately un busy. It came from the boxy cars of the 70s and then rounding got a lil more pronounced into the late 90s but the key traits of the clean straight lines are still there.
Bmw had a Japanese designer do the e39 and you see the strong body lines and clean curve in it. Take away the mercedes grille pieces and squared off edges from the Sacco designed 190, w124, w140 and it has the same focus.
