How my plug in hybrid does 2 L/100 km (Part 3) #cars
Jonas says 2 litres per 100 km in a 225 hp car is cap. My own car does it.
A plug in hybrid has two tanks: a battery and a fuel tank.
1. Normal mode: battery first. When it’s empty, it runs mostly on petrol.
2. My battery does about 34 km. On the motorway that’s gone fast.
3. On long trips I start full and let the car blend both, so electric helps the engine the whole way.
My Peugeot 508 plug in hybrid (225 hp): 200 km legs on cruise control from a full battery, 1.5 to 2.5 L/100 km on the trip computer. With an empty battery at 160 km/h it drinks about 8.5.
The battery doesn’t make it efficient. Charging it does. Real world studies of plug in hybrids in Germany (Fraunhofer ISI) found private owners average about 4 L/100 km, far above the official figure, mostly because they drive on electric only about half the time.
My car, my trips. Trip computer readings are fuel only; the electricity from the plug comes on top.
