We crashed two real CLA models into each other. Here’s why.

What happens when two real cars meet in a T-bone crash?

We staged the world’s first high-speed intersection crash test with two moving vehicles: a CLA Shooting Brake with an electrified combustion engine struck the driver’s side of an all-electric CLA, with both vehicles travelling at 56 km/h. At this speed, the impact represents a very severe intersection collision, near the upper end of speeds typically seen in real-world junction accidents In everyday driving, the CLA’s active safety systems can help prevent this kind of crash or mitigate its severity.

So, how did the cars perform? The dummy readings and other data indicate that all safety systems worked as intended for the one reason: to keep your occupants as safe as possible.

The electric CLA’s battery cells remained protected within their dedicated survival space.
However, did you know that this type of car-to-car T-bone impact test isn’t required by any regulation or standard safety rating?
Go behind the scenes of the test to see how real-world accident research, digital simulation and physical crash testing come together in our approach to real-life safety.
