The Smart #2 Is Finally a Smart Car Again!
Smart is finally making a Smart car again.
This is the new Smart #2 – a tiny two-seat electric city car that’s just 2.75 metres long, rear-wheel drive and designed to bring the Smart brand back to its roots.
After years of increasingly large SUVs, Smart has gone back to the idea that made the original City Coupe and Fortwo so brilliant: make it small, fun, distinctive and incredibly easy to drive around town.
The #2 gets a 35.8kWh LFP battery, with Smart targeting up to 180 miles of range. It can charge from 10–80% in around 20 minutes at up to 65kW, while higher-spec versions get 11kW AC charging. There’s also Vehicle-to-Load capability.
And despite its tiny dimensions, Smart hasn’t exactly skimped on the technology. There’s adaptive cruise control, Highway Assist, Smart Pilot Assist, LED lighting and plenty of connectivity, while the Premium version adds heated seats, a glass roof and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
Underneath, it’s rear-wheel drive with an 82hp motor, wider rear tyres and – remarkably – a five-link rear suspension setup.
There are three versions planned for the UK: Pure, Premium and a limited-run Couture Edition, with the #2 expected to cost less than £20,000 when it arrives early next year.
That’s potentially cheaper than you might expect for a car that feels more like a modern interpretation of the original Smart than another anonymous electric hatchback.
