PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – In the last few years, there has been an increase in e-bikes in Panama City Beach. After hearing complaints from the community, the city council has decided to set new citywide E-Bike rules to keep both riders and pedestrians safe.
Class 1 E-Bikes, which are pedal-assisted, are still permitted on sidewalks in most areas, but must follow a 10 mph speed limit.
Any E-Bikes that are not Class 1 are no longer allowed on sidewalks and must use the bike lane, riding with the flow of traffic.
Restrictions are tighter on Front Beach Road. All E-Bikes, including Class 1, must use the bike or multi-modal lane. Bikes are not allowed on the sidewalk on Front Beach Road.
“We started getting a lot of complaints, and the police department had several incidents where E-Bikes had actually made contact with pedestrians, and there were some injuries,” said Panama City Beach Councilman Paul Casto. “So there became a need to try to slow them down, and regulate them, and try to put some speed limits on them.”
The rules are effective immediately and will be enforced by the Panama City Beach Police Department.
