BERLIN — Berlin police have increased patrols and enforcement following complaints about reckless and unsafe riding of e-bikes, mopeds, dirt bikes, scooters, bicycles and similar vehicles on town roads.
Over the past two months, police said they have responded to more than 15 documented incidents involving these types of vehicles. Many involved groups of riders or multiple people.
Police have responded with vehicle stops, arrests, warnings and other enforcement measures. Officers have also identified juvenile riders and notified their parents when appropriate.
The department has increased patrols in areas where unsafe riding has been reported.
Police said the increased enforcement is not intended to discourage people from legally using e-bikes, scooters and similar vehicles. Instead, officers are focusing on reckless riding, traffic violations and behavior that could put riders, pedestrians, drivers and others at risk.
The department plans to continue targeted patrols throughout Berlin and take enforcement action when officers find violations.
Police are also asking parents and guardians to talk with younger riders about following traffic laws and safely operating e-bikes, scooters and other vehicles on public roads. They are also encouraging families to discuss the possible consequences of reckless riding.
