Berlin police report recent rise in incidents involving e-bikes, mopeds, dirt bikes and scooters

Over the past two months, Berlin police documented more than 15 incidents involving these vehicle types. They have ramped up enforcement across town in response.

BERLIN, Connecticut — E-bikes, motorized bicycles, mopeds, dirtbikes, scooters, bicycles and similar vehicles are being operated in an increasingly reckless manner across the town of Berlin, according to the police department.

Drew Gallupe, Berlin’s deputy police chief, issued a release on Tuesday reporting a steep rise in incidents involving these vehicle types.

Gallupe shared that over the past two months, Berlin police have documented more than 15 of these incidents. Many of them involved groups of riders and multiple people rather than a single operator.

“In response, patrol officers have increased directed enforcement and focused attention on areas where these complaints and violations have been reported,” Gallupe said.

Enforcement efforts include motor vehicle stops, arrests, warnings, identification of juvenile operators and parent notification if necessary.

Officers are also conducting direct patrols in the areas where these vehicles have been seen being operated recklessly.

“The department’s goal is not to discourage the lawful use of e-bikes or similar vehicles,” Gallupe said. “Our focus is on reckless operation, traffic violations and conduct that places riders, pedestrians, motorists and the public at risk.”

Gallupe voiced appreciation for those who have reported concerns and provided information.

He said officers will continue directed enforcement across town. They will take appropriate action when violations are seen.

“We also encourage parents and guardians to speak with younger riders about safe operation, obeying traffic laws and the consequences of reckless behavior on public roadways,” Gallupe said.
