Thanks to a 41.2 kWh battery pack, Volvo’s XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids are now rated at 100+ kilometres of range
Hot on the heels of the updated XC40, Volvo is turning its attention to the XC60 and XC90, imbuing the larger siblings with everyone’s favourite EV-related buzzwords: more range.
Leading the updates for 2027 is a larger battery. Both the XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids will now use a 41.2 kWh unit, up from 18.8 in the outgoing models. This results in a significant range bump: Volvo says the XC60 can do up to 126 kilometres in electric-only mode, and 117 km in the larger and heavier XC90.
Along with the increased capacity and range, the new battery pack is now flat and better-integrated into the XC60 and 90’s floor structure. Charging seems slow — Volvo quotes almost six hours for a zero-to-100 per cent charge on a Level 2 box, at speeds of 7.2 kW — but we’ll reserve final judgment until we plug in the ’27s at the office ourselves.
Elsewhere, the XC60 sees a mild facelift bringing the overall look in line with the 2028 XC40, along with new colour and trim options inside and out, new wheel designs, improved materials, and Google’s AI assistant now baked into the infotainment.
Also on the docket is an expanded set of capabilities for Volvo’s suite of driver and active safety assists, including a door-opening alert and automated lane changes. The 2027 XC90 sees the same updates to its tech suite but skips the facelift, as it received a nip-and-tuck last year.
Production for the 2027 XC60 and XC90 kicks off in the next few weeks. Expect to see them in dealers in the first half of next year.
