The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI is here — and it could be one of the most interesting electric hot hatches yet. With 326bhp, 545Nm of torque, launch control, a 200km/h top speed and up to 601km (373 miles) of WLTP range, Volkswagen has given the ID.3 some serious GTI hardware.
But can an electric car really capture the essence of a Volkswagen GTI?
In this first look at the new VW ID.3 GTI, I take a detailed look around the car in Hamburg, including the GTI-specific exterior styling, red GTI detailing, honeycomb wheels, illuminated badging and the nods to the original Mk1 Golf GTI, which celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Inside, the ID.3 GTI gets tartan GTI seats, Alcantara trim, red stitching, physical controls, a new steering wheel and a dedicated GTI mode. There’s even a brilliant retro mode that brings the classic Mk1 Golf GTI instrument graphics to the digital display.
The updated ID.3 also gets significantly improved software and infotainment, while the GTI uses a 79kWh battery with an official 601km WLTP range and DC fast charging of up to 183kW.
I’ll also look at the practicality of the ID.3 GTI, including its 385-litre boot, rear-seat space and storage, and compare some of its interior details with the new ID. Polo GTI.
The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI is expected to arrive in spring 2027.
But the big question remains: does an electric car deserve the famous GTI badge?
