A Eugene man was arrested over the weekend after stealing a Tesla and driving it to a stranger’s home, where he planned to drink a beer and take a shower, the Eugene Police Department said.
According to police, the man was unable to enter the home and was standing in the driveway when police arrived.
At 12:15 p.m. September 12, Eugene police were dispatched to a report of a stolen vehicle. The owner of the Tesla was able to track the vehicle on the Tesla app to an address on Waite Street.
Officers arrived at the home and found the Tesla with a smashed back window and Kip Allen Carr, 48, standing a few feet from it.
There were various belongings sprinkled around the vehicle and Carr was wearing a jacket that belonged to the car’s owner.
Carr eventually admitted to stealing the Tesla and attempting to open the home’s front door, but the door was locked.
Carr was arrested and lodged at the Lane County Jail on charges of First-Degree Burglary of a Residence, Third-Degree Theft from a Vehicle, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle and First-Degree Criminal Mischief.
The home was not entered and the vehicle was recovered by the owner.
