A Fraunhofer Institute study of nearly 1 million European PHEVs (2021-2023) found real-world fuel consumption averaging 5.9-6.1 L/100km — roughly three times higher than the official WLTP-rated 1.5-2 L/100km — even accounting for owners who do charge regularly. The gap comes down to how often the combustion engine actually kicks in during real driving versus the lab test’s assumed electric-mode share, prompting researchers to call for the EU to overhaul its testing standards and emissions-credit rules for PHEVs.
