Volvo has announced the return of the plug-in hybrid version of the compact XC40 crossover. The updated model is expected to reach dealers early next year and will receive a revised design, a larger infotainment display, the Google Gemini voice assistant, and a new sensor and software platform for safety systems.
As The Verge reports, Volvo stopped selling the plug-in hybrid XC40 about three years ago. At the same time, the mild-hybrid version of the model and the electric EX40 remained available in the United States and other countries. The company has not yet disclosed powertrain specifications, electric motor details, electric driving range, or battery capacity.
Changes to the design and interior
The XC40 will receive updated LED headlights in Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” style, as well as a new grille, bumper, hood, and front fenders. At the rear, the lighting and bumper will be changed, and the tailgate will also be upgraded. The model will be offered with three diamond-cut wheel options measuring 18, 19, and 20 inches.

The interior will feature an 11.2-inch display with higher resolution and a new Volvo interface designed for faster navigation with fewer taps. Gemini will operate as a voice assistant: it will be able to plan routes, search for specific locations and detours, and manage messages. Volvo also announced improved wireless smartphone charging and new storage solutions.
Sensors and driver assistance
The new platform will include front and corner radars, a front camera, rear corner radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and parking cameras. According to Volvo, it is intended to provide real-time collision avoidance, automatic emergency steering, and automatic emergency braking.
New features include a warning about the danger of opening doors in front of cyclists, assistance when changing lanes, and smoother lane-keeping support on long journeys. A 3D camera with a 360-degree view will be optionally available for low-speed maneuvering and parking.
