Making the electric transition

The Lake Oswego Sustainability Network seeks to provide the resources and information people need to make their homes and vehicles more environmentally friendly.
The organization’s marquee annual event, the Clean Energy and EV Fair, is right around the corner.
“This summer showed once again that climate is of great concern and people often ask, ‘What can I do?’ What homeowners can do is to transition their homes off fossil fuels and onto Oregon’s increasingly clean and renewable electricity,” LOSN board member Linda Ganzini said.
The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Lake Oswego United Methodist Church.
It will feature the opportunity to test-drive vehicles — the first 60 attendees who do so will receive a free lunch from Spice of Africa — learn about electrification options from vendors for products like induction stovetops, solar panels and heat pumps, enter into a drawing for an electric leaf blower, visit the Lake Oswego School District’s electric school bus and much more. Electric vehicle owners can also show off their EVs and answer questions from attendees. The fair has also attracted more vendor sponsors than previous years.
Ganzini and fellow LOSN board member Alan Bates emphasized that, despite federal rollbacks of electrification tax credits, state credits and lower electric vehicle costs can still make buying an EV affordable.
“There’s a perception that all EVs are unaffordable and I don’t think that’s the case,” Bates said.
They also said learning about different brands from owners rather than salespeople can be informative for prospective buyers.
“It’s a powerful way to shop and learn about vehicles,” Bates said.
The event typically draws about half Lake Oswego residents and half people from out of town and the LOSN encourages anyone interested in electrification and addressing climate change to stop by.
