GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Grand Rapids has recently introduced Veo as its micromobility vendor, raising concerns of affordability for daily users of e-bikes and scooters.
Since 2022, Grand Rapids has utilized Lime as its sole micromobility vendor, but introduced its replacement, Veo, this week. City officials said that affordability was a “huge” component in making the switch, but users of the electric vehicles have their doubts, claiming that the change has become more expensive.
Grand Rapids swaps Lime for more affordable Veo e-bikes
News 8’s Duncan Mclean took to the streets of Grand Rapids in a new Veo scooter to see for himself the difference in price, comparing it to a ride with Lime from earlier this summer.
In June, a 0.9-mile, nearly nine-minute ride with Lime cost $4.49, including a $1 activation fee and tax.
This week, a 1.24-mile 10-minute ride with Veo cost $4.56, including the same $1 activation fee and tax.
One minute of riding with Lime costs 0.36 cents, while Veo charges 0.33 cents per minute of use. “Not a perfect comparison”, Mclean said, but the pricing system on both e-scooter vendors are similar.
The city says that the major price differences are not in the per-minute usage, but rather in the tiered subscription options available on Veo’s app.
For example, Veo’s access program for eligible riders offers daily 30-minute rides for $5 a month. Lime charged roughly $40 per week for their access program, city officials said in a Tuesday press briefing.
Other Veo plans include a $5.99-per-month premium that erases activation fees and offers perks to frequent riders, a $14.99-per-week commuter pass that offers two 20-minute daily rides and a university pass for students that discounts the base rate by 33%.
