GRIDLEY, Calif. – The Gridley Police Department issued written warnings to students at a local school for e-bike and e-scooter violations as part of a student safety effort. Parents received notifications through ParentSquare to inform families about legal requirements and safety standards.
The warnings served as an educational opportunity, but moving forward, violations may result in citations and fines. Police emphasized the importance of following California Vehicle Code requirements for these modes of transportation.
Gridley PD states their goal is not to discourage students from using these convenient forms of transportation — it is to make sure they are doing so safely, responsibly, and legally.
Parents are encouraged to discuss proper helmet use, age and licensing requirements, passenger restrictions and speed limits with their students. The department also stressed the importance of understanding where e-bikes and e-scooters are permitted to operate.
Not all electric bikes are classified the same, and rules vary depending on the class or type of e-bike or electric scooter. The police department provided a breakdown of classifications, requirements and applicable laws to help families understand the differences.
The department thanked students, parents and the school community for helping keep kids safe. Officials encouraged families to share the safety information with others who may benefit from it.
