GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Green Bay police are warning parents to talk with their kids about e-bike safety, because they’re seeing a jump in the number of crashes.

Officers say many crashes involve young riders going through stop signs and red lights and darting into traffic on high-powered e-bikes that can reach car-like speeds.

Private schools are already in session, and the public school district starts classes next week.

Police are urging parents to make sure children wear helmets and know traffic rules before riding to school. They’re also urging parents to check whether that bike is actually street legal.

They also advise e-bike riders to slow down, because a few extra miles an hour can make the difference between walking way from a crash or getting a ride to the emergency room.

“The more speed you’re getting — that’s just basic physics — the more speed, you’re going to have worse injuries,” Green Bay Police Traffic Sgt. Sean Hamill said.

“Hitting your head at 20 miles an hour, even on a regular bicycle, and fall off without a helmet, that could be fatal.”

The City of Green Bay doesn’t have a specific e-bike ordinance, but officials are looking at imposing more rules to help reduce dangerous crashes.
