In July 2026, electric vehicle registrations in Europe rose by 51% compared with the same month last year, and their share among all new cars reached 25%. A total of 277,006 electric vehicles were registered in the region.
As InsideEVs reports, citing Dataforce, the calculations cover 98% of all new car registrations in EU countries, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
Growth outpaced the car market
During the first seven months of 2026, electric vehicle registrations in Europe increased by 37% year-on-year. By comparison, the entire European car market grew by 4.1% in July and by 5.7% from January through July.
Electric vehicle registrations grew faster than sales of plug-in hybrids and hybrids without mains charging. Plug-in hybrid sales increased by 15% in July, while sales of hybrids without mains charging rose by 9%. The publication cites higher fuel prices and an expanding range of electric vehicle models as likely factors behind the growth.

In France, electric vehicles accounted for 35% in July, with registrations exceeding 44,000. In Germany, the share of fully electric cars reached 29.3%, with nearly 79,000 such vehicles registered.
Segment leaders
The most popular electric vehicle in Europe in July was the Skoda Elroq. It was followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and Renault 5 E-Tech. At the same time, Tesla Model Y retained first place among electric vehicles for January through July: 115,759 cars were registered, 55% more than a year earlier. The Skoda Elroq ranked second with 67,679 vehicles, while the Tesla Model 3 was third with 57,086.
European sales of plug-in hybrids totalled 125,530 vehicles in July. Chinese models accounted for 34% of this segment and nearly half of the positions in the top 10. The July leader was the BYD Seal U, followed by the BYD Atto 2, while the Jaecoo 7 ranked fourth. Over seven months, the top three positions in the plug-in hybrid segment were held by the BYD Seal U, BYD Atto and Jaecoo 7.
