Chery Q | Will This Be The Most Popular Electric Car in South Africa?
The Chery Q is coming to South Africa at a time when affordable electric cars are becoming more competitive — but could this little EV actually become one of the most popular electric cars in the country?
I got behind the wheel of the new Chery Q in Cape Town, including around the V&A Waterfront, to see what this compact electric car is really like to drive and whether it has what it takes to challenge some of the most affordable EVs currently available in South Africa.
With Chery South Africa announcing pricing from around R350,000, the Q is entering a very interesting part of the market. It goes up against cars like the BYD Dolphin Surf and Geely E2, but offers a larger 42.7 kWh battery, a 90 kW rear-mounted electric motor and a claimed range of up to 400 km on the NEDC cycle.
In this review, I look at the price, battery and range, motor output, driving experience, exterior design, boot space and interior, while also taking a closer look at what makes the Chery Q different from its affordable EV rivals.
The Q is particularly interesting because Chery has focused on making it compact enough for city driving while still offering a surprisingly spacious cabin and useful practicality. It gets a 375-litre boot, a 70-litre frunk and a 2,700 mm wheelbase, making it considerably more practical than its compact dimensions might suggest.
So, could the Chery Q become one of South Africa’s most popular electric cars? And would you choose it over the BYD Dolphin Surf or Geely E2?
