Ride1Up has been undercutting the direct to consumer ebike market since 2018, and the new Portola 02 is its latest folding model, sold in four builds across two frames: the stripped-down Portola 02 Lite starting at $895 and the fender-and-rack-equipped Portola 02 topping out at $1,095 with the 15Ah battery. In this review we walk through every component, from the 750W AKM motor with its switchable Intui-Drive torque and cadence sensor to the hydraulic disc brakes, 8-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain, 100 mm suspension fork, and the color display with its surprisingly deep customization menu. We cover fit for riders from 4’10” on up, demonstrate the full folding process, then hit the road for throttle-only testing, a run through all five assist levels on both sensor modes, our brake test, and the big hill climb, before wrapping up with the pros and cons and which of the four builds makes the most sense.
