Blending the comfort of a silent executive sedan with the performance of an AMG, can these two personalities work together?

Plug-in hybrid performance cars are a bit like this old saying — when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Well, yes, that’s exactly what performance car makers have done with hybrid technology. Come to think of it, electrification was originally introduced to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and make cars a little kinder to the environment. But over the past decade, performance carmakers have turned that idea on its head. In order to meet the ever-tightening emissions norms, carmakers have embraced them as a performance enhancer.

From BMW and Porsche to Ferrari, and Mercedes-AMG, almost every performance brand has used hybrid technology to unlock staggering levels of power and performance.

That’s precisely the philosophy behind the newly launched Mercedes-AMG E 53 Plug-in Hybrid as well. On one hand, it has mind-numbing AMG firepower and noise, while on the other, it has a refined electric motor that allows it to glide through city traffic in near silence. But, how well does this dual personality work in Indian conditions? Is it a proper, hard-edged performance machine, or does it offer the calm, luxurious, almost EV-like experience you’d expect from an E-Class?

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Plug-in Hybrid First Drive Review: Part Devil, Part Angel

Driving the E 53 PHEV is a bit like having both an angel and a devil sitting on your shoulders. On one shoulder sits the sensible side of your personality, constantly reminding you to be responsible, and considerate towards your surroundings. So, you simply stick to the default ‘EL’ or all-electric mode of the E 53 and let it go about its business like a civilised luxury sedan. It features a 28.6kWh battery pack that allows it an electric-only range of up to 100km. And it’s no slouch in this eco-friendly mode. The battery powers a 480Nm producing electric motor that can propel the E 53 to a top speed of 140km/h without using any dinosaur juice. In congested urban environments, it feels refined, effortless, and almost indistinguishable from a dedicated EV.

And then there’s the devil side. One twist of the AMG Dynamic Select controller into Sport+ mode and the all the 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo petrol motor comes to life with an unmistakable AMG bark. The calm and quiet goes right out of the window. The AMG power pins you back to the seat while the electric motor fills in every gap in the power delivery with instant torque. Together, they produce 585bhp and 750Nm, and when launch control or Race Start is engaged, the E 53 can clock 0 to 100km/h in under four seconds. The acceleration remains relentless but there aren’t typical AMG theatrics. No wheel spin, no fishtailing, just immense traction and grip, thanks to its 4MATIC+ AWD system. There’s an addictive, seamless surge that simply doesn’t let up, though, and before you realise it, you’re travelling at licence-cancelling speeds!

The best part is that all this performance is complemented by a superb handling package. The steering is precise, the chassis feels beautifully tied down, and the immense grip from the all-wheel-drive system encourages you to carry breakneck speeds through corners. And yet, the E 53 never feels hard-as-knuckles or overwhelming. Even when you give it the full beans, it remains predictable and approachable, giving you the confidence to exploit its performance without feeling like it’s waiting to catch you out.

It’s not entirely without flaws, however. In EV mode, the aggressive regenerative braking makes the brake pedal feel artificial and slightly wooden, requiring a period of adjustment. Switch to Hybrid or Sport modes, and the conventional brakes suddenly become much sharper, forcing you to again recalibrate your braking inputs. Long story short, the brakes don’t feel consistent across different driving modes.

Underneath all the AMG madness, this is still an E-Class. That underlying DNA shines through the moment you dial everything back into Comfort mode. The adaptive suspension softens noticeably, ironing out broken tarmac and expansion joints with surprising composure for a car riding on large 20-inch wheels. It’s firm enough to remind you that you’re driving a performance sedan, but it’s never punishing.

What’s more even the rear seats offer enough space for two adults to travel in genuine comfort — quite impressive given this one is based on the regular and not LWB derivative that’s sold in India. Long story short, unlike many high-performance cars that demand compromises every time you use them, the E 53 remains perfectly happy to double up as an executive luxury sedan.

The cabin strikes an equally convincing balance between sportiness and luxury. There are AMG-specific sports seats, a thick-rimmed steering wheel, unique graphics for the digital displays, and plenty of performance-focused menus that allow you to monitor everything from power distribution to lap data. Yet it never loses the sense of occasion that defines a Mercedes-Benz interior. Material quality is exceptional, the fit and finish are immaculate, and the cabin feels every bit as expensive as a Mercedes should.

Visually, the E 53 is aggressive without being ostentatious. The Panamericana grille, muscular wheel arches, sculpted power dome on the bonnet, larger air intakes, and tasty 20-inch AMG alloy wheels give it a sporty yet understated demeanour. That split personality is perhaps the E 53’s greatest strength.

Mercedes-AMG E 53 Plug-in Hybrid First Drive Review: Verdict

Traditional AMG purists may argue that the added battery weight and electrification dilute the raw character of the E 53. There’s certainly some truth to that, although compared to the previous-generation model, this new plug-in hybrid feels significantly more authentic, and much closer to an actual AMG.

At ₹1.48 crore (ex-showroom), it also makes a compelling case for itself, as it undercuts several performance sedans capable of delivering similar levels of pace while offering something many of them simply cannot — the ability to be a refined luxury sedan, an efficient EV, and a genuinely exciting AMG—all within the same car.
