A recent emphasis patrol to educate people about Washington state’s new electric bike and scooter rules went well, according to Clarkston Police Chief Josh Daniel.

During Monday night’s city council meeting, the chief said his officers talked to 23 riders inside city limits in one week. Many were unaware that kids under the age of 16 are not allowed to zip around on electric scooters.

“We saw a lot of juveniles out there, and the kids had no idea whatsoever about the new rules,” Daniel told the council. “We’ll keep up with the education process, and make another push in the schools when school starts. Overall, we’re pretty pleased with how it went.”

All of the department’s officers are well versed on the rules, which went into effect last month, the chief said. They will continue to spread the word, and contact the parents of repeat offenders if necessary.
