ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) — A 12-year-old is hospitalized after crashing a high-powered electric motorcycle into a pickup truck in Rochester Hills.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the child was knocked unconscious after hitting the parked Ram 1500 at around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, in the area of Dorfield Drive and Briston Drive.
When multiple 911 calls came in, EMS responded quickly rushed the child to a local hospital.
Investigators said the electric motorbike involved can reach speeds over 45 miles per hour; and while the child was wearing a helmet, the helmet designed for bicycle use and was not a motorcycle-rated helmet.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard cautioned parents regarding these vehicles, which are becoming more and more popular.
“These high-powered electric motorcycles are capable of reaching speeds that can cause catastrophic injuries in a matter of seconds, and they should never be treated as toys,” Bouchard said, in a news release.
“Parents need to understand exactly what they are purchasing for their children, and riders need to know and follow the law. That includes understanding where these vehicles can legally be operated, what licensing and registration requirements apply, and using safety equipment specifically designed for the type of vehicle being ridden. A bicycle helmet is not designed to provide the same level of protection as a properly rated motorcycle helmet. We want people to enjoy these emerging technologies, but they must do so safely, responsibly and within the law.”
The child was listed in serious but stable condition, the OCSO said.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
