The British automotive landscape has shifted gears as electric vehicles drive the new car market to a massive mid-year performance surge.

Heavy price-slashing triggers a massive private buyer boom across the UK car market
According to the official industry figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), registrations of pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have skyrocketed by a historic 44.5% year-on-year, jumping to 43,106 units.
This massive surge has given electrified models a record-breaking 27.5% share of the total new car market. This boom is being driven by an abundance of fresh, exciting vehicle choices and aggressive, multi-billion-pound price-slashing by manufacturers desperate to meet strict government zero-emission mandates.
Leading the charge for lifestyle drivers is a new wave of sporty, high-performance electric crossovers that are successfully injecting soul back into emission-free motoring. A prime example of this trend is the track-tested Vauxhall Mokka GSE (Grand Sport Electric).
Writing in a dedicated automotive review for City AM, motoring critics noted that the rally-inspired compact crossover stands out as “the most surprising car” in its class, delivering 281 horsepower and hitting 0-62mph in just 5.9 seconds.
Equipped with motorsport-grade Alcon brakes, aggressive styling, and a Torsen limited-slip differential, vehicles like the Mokka GSE are proving to traditional hot-hatch enthusiasts that switching to electric power doesn’t mean sacrificing driving dynamics.
While industry insiders warn that heavy retail discounting is putting immense pressure on manufacturer profit margins, British buyers are reaping the benefits. Private registrations jumped by 12.6% as everyday motorists flooded dealerships to take advantage of unprecedented financing deals and electric car grants.
In an official industry briefing released to reporters and national automotive desks, SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes voiced grave concerns over how much these targets are hurting brand bottom lines.
Hawes stated: “Weakening private retail demand particularly for EVs and despite generous manufacturer discounts, is the over-riding concern,” noting that the pace of the transition remains a fundamental challenge without sustained support.
