On Aug. 12, a new law will take effect that directly affects the growing trend of e-bikes and e-motos for kids. Many parents are buying these devices for many different reasons — whether for ease of transportation, entertainment, low cost compared to a vehicle, etc.
While the law fluctuates on where you can ride each type of e-device depending on your local municipality, the onus of your child’s safety falls on you as a parent. Take every precaution to protect your kids and to help teach them to ride responsibly.
If you opt to buy an e-motorcycle, the rider must have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement, a valid registration and proof of insurance. The minimum age for a motorcycle license in Colorado is 16. In addition, minors are required to wear a helmet.
The law is going into effect this August that impacts what you have to do so your teen can obtain that motorcycle endorsement.
Come Aug. 12, a minor (anyone under the age of 18) must now have written permission from a parent or guardian to obtain a motorcycle endorsement.
Previously, a minor just needed consent from anyone over the age of 21.
It is believed that requiring a parent or guardian’s permission will increase the safety and education of your child and decrease the amount of traumatic incidents our youth are involved in.
As these devices become more and more popular and accessible, the number of crashes involving juveniles has increased.
To protect your children, educate yourself on your local municipality’s laws regarding these devices. Parents are the No. 1 influence on a child, so take advantage and keep your child safe.
