ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (NEWS 15) — An Opelousas man was killed after his electric bicycle was rear-ended by a crossover vehicle, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers identified the victim as Jamie Doucet, 57, of Opelousas.
They reported the crash happened on the I-49 Service Road near Lago Avenue in St. Landry Parish, which is about three miles north of the Grand Coteau-Sunset exit, on Tuesday, July 28, just before 6 a.m.
They explained the preliminary investigation revealed Doucet was riding the electric bicycle south on the I-49 Service Road when a 2012 Nissan Rogue that was also traveling south on the service road, for reasons still under investigation, struck the bicycle from behind.
They added Doucet, who was not wearing a helmet or reflective clothing, was severely injured and died at the scene. They noted the driver of the Nissan was properly buckled up and was not injured.
According to LSP, the driver of the Nissan was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected.
The crash remains under investigation.
