Was this attempted to be converted to a cable shifter linkage?

Found this cable in the trunk, looks like it fits where the bracket goes on the transmission pan but I’m not sure, I have no experience or knowledge on what modifications people do on classics. A second opinion would be helpful

Also unsure why the previous owner would use cable over the rod linkage. Clearance issues maybe? The car has headers but it looked like the OEM rods would still fit? Should I forget trying to make this work and find the OEM linkage (if this even is the cable linkage)?
