The Hagerstown Fire Department is reminding residents to use e-bikes and electric scooters safely.
Riders should wear a helmet, follow traffic laws, travel at a safe speed, use lights at night and wear bright or reflective clothing. Riders should also remain alert around pedestrians, signal turns and give others enough space.
Before riding, users should check the brakes, tires and battery.
The department recommends using only the charger provided with the device. Batteries should be charged on a hard, flat surface away from exits and sleeping areas. Damaged or modified batteries should not be charged, and devices should be unplugged once fully charged.
Lithium-ion batteries can fail without warning and cause fast-moving fires.
