Why Mercedes-Benz is changing both the material and the rivet | Tech Explained

A door pocket and a rivet walk into a Mercedes-Benz…

Sounds like the start of a very niche joke. But in this episode of Tech Explained, our host Rob shows you why these two tiny details matter for the future of reuse, repair and recycling.

First up, he gets his hands on a PET monosandwich door pocket made with recycled PET and designed to reduce material complexity. Then, Rob demonstrates how a demountable thermoplastic rivet connection helps parts separate later in a much more controlled way.

The novel monomaterial carrier featuring a new removable rivet is only one project within Tomorrow XX, a technology programme exploring the limits of technical feasibility. What is shown here reflects a current development stage and is intended to illustrate potential approaches pursued by Mercedes-Benz. The technology is not yet available and not used in series vehicles.

Watch now and discover why taking car parts apart can be just as clever as putting them together.
