The Off-Grid EV Charger Hiding on Route 66

I found one of the most unusual EV charging stations I’ve ever seen: an off-grid fast charger on historic Route 66 in Barstow, California.

Built by Coral Charge, this station uses hundreds of solar panels and battery storage to deliver charging speeds of up to 180 kW, all without a traditional grid connection.

Located just off Interstate 15 where it meets Route 66, this project shows how solar and battery storage could help bring EV charging to places where grid upgrades are expensive or take years to complete.

In this video I take a closer look at the station, test the charging speed with my Kia EV9, and explore whether off-grid charging could become a bigger part of the future of EV infrastructure.
