YANGON – The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that it will provide EVs to replace vehicles that are more than 20 years old from the date of manufacture, vehicles that cannot be repaired for safe driving, and vehicles that are less than 20 years old but that people want to surrender voluntarily.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a notice on May 28th regarding the cancellation of old/used vehicles and the import of replacement electric vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport announced that vehicles that are older than 20 years old, cannot be repaired to drive safely, and vehicles that are not older than 20 years old but wish to be donated will be replaced with electric vehicles (EVs) at a price equal to the value of the donated vehicle.
If you submit the scrap vehicle approval form (D) issued by the Department of Road Transport Administration for the deposit of old/used vehicles, the National Steering Committee for the Development of Electric Vehicles and Related Industries will examine and approve the import of an electric vehicle (EV) suitable for the type of vehicle deposited, and the Central Bank of Myanmar will sell the foreign currency at a reasonable price, according to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
According to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the policy will be implemented for vehicles that are 20 years old, vehicles that are not safe to drive on the roads, and vehicle owners who want to trade in their vehicles for EVs even though they are less than 20 years old. The previously set policy for old vehicles will remain the same, according to some vehicle dealers.
There are over 100,000 to 200,000 vehicles in Myanmar that were manufactured after 2006. If these vehicles were to be scrapped and replaced with EVs, at least $20,000 per EV would require at least $4 billion, which is not realistic given the foreign exchange requirements.
