The compact SUV market has exploded over the past several years, with established manufacturers facing new upstarts looking to secure a slice of the market. One of the hottest contested arenas is the electric SUV, as the growing technology offers new automakers the chance to get ahead of established brands, who are having to learn on the fly in this brave new world.

Rivian is one such brand, though it has thus far focused on the higher-end electric truck and SUV market. It’s now looking to make moves on the more affordable side of the coin, with the R2 SUV. The machine arguably holds the key to the company’s long-term success, and it looks promising so far. If the SUV seems tantalizing to you, and you’ve got a fair chunk of money to throw at a new EV SUV, then we’re here to help. This is how much you’ll pay for a fully loaded example of the new R2.

The Rivian R2, Trim By Trim

Following its 2024 original premiere, the R2 compact SUV finally reached customers in early 2026. Rivian plans to offer the model in three trim levels, with a staggered launch for them. The range-topping Performance trim is already available, while the mid-range Premium is set to debut towards the end of the year. The cheapest of the trio is the Standard, which is supposed to arrive in 2027.

Aside from various equipment differences among the three R2s on the menu, the main difference between them concerns performance. The Standard uses a single-motor electric powertrain that sends 350 horsepower to the rear wheels in base form, though it can be had with a 450 hp dual-motor setup that provides extra grunt and all-wheel drive. The Premium comes with the entry-level dual-motor setup as standard, with the main difference from the cheaper Standard being additional equipment and refinement. Then we come to the Performance, which gets an upgraded dual-motor setup that shares a commanding 656 hp between all four wheels. With a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.6 seconds, it’s by far the fastest of the options.

While the Performance starts at $57,990, the Premium can be picked up for $53,990 before delving into the various options available. The Standard is comfortably the cheapest at just shy of $49,000 in single-motor form, while the dual-motor option adds $3,500 to the final bill. Those after frugality may prefer the single-motor Standard, seeing as it can achieve 345 miles on a single charge. Both dual-motor units can reach 330 miles, though, so customers aren’t giving away much range for the extra grunt and traction.

Aside from the more potent powertrain, the R2 Performance comes with plenty of handy extras over the lower-end versions. Larger, sportier wheels are a good example of this, while a semi-active suspension setup helps provide greater versatility and driver confidence. Given the amount of power it chucks out, the extra agility and stability the setup provides are welcome.

By the time a buyer finishes adding all the extras available for a new R2 Performance, they would have an invoice for $68,960. That said, if they are lucky enough to get ahold of one of the early Launch Package cars that comes with the free extras, this would be reduced to $65,510. Whichever you end up with, that’s quite a lot of cash to splash out in one go. As a result, a more cost-effective way to get your dream R2 is to finance it over a longer term.

Best EV Lease Deals For May 2026

Looking to go electric? These automakers have the best electric car deals right now.

For example, the post-Launch Package cars cost around $1,100 per month over five years at an interest rate of 5%. This includes dealer fees, as well as a $10,000 down payment, which can be sourced from the trade-in value of your current vehicle or by putting down cash. These terms can be altered to your specific circumstances, so the monthly cost could either increase or decrease depending on how you approach it. For reference, our example would be reduced to $1,050 per month should you secure a Launch Package specimen based on the same terms.

Is A Fully Loaded Rivian R2 Worth The Cost?

It’s hard to argue that nearly $70,000 is a lot to shell out for a new car, but Rivian has ensured the car is well-priced compared to its close rivals, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y. The R2 Performance is vastly more powerful than either of these offerings, while providing more cabin space and a greater range. The standard machine costs around the same as the Model Y, while the Mach-E is $4,000 less. Once fully loaded, the gap opens up.

Rivian’s Cheapest R1 Models Are Living On Borrowed Time

Rivian is simplifying its lineup, but expect a higher starting price

A Model Y Performance AWD comes in at $59,800 fully loaded, and Tesla is pretty generous with standard equipment. Considering the practicality and performance advantage the R2 Performance enjoys over both cars, its peak $68k cost ensures it’s very competitive. The Model Y Performance is a solid value at nearly $10,000 less, but you’ll have to give away a lot of performance to secure it.

The R2 is an extremely important creation for Rivian, and it’s not a stretch to say the company’s future largely relies on the offering. A fully loaded example may be more expensive than the likes of the Model Y, but its rugged looks, performance, and practicality set it apart as a tantalizing choice. We love Rivian’s larger and more expensive R1S SUV, so if the company can pull off the same trick with the more affordable R2, you should be in for a treat.
