China’s 635kW plug-in Prado and Everest rival (GWM Tank 400 Hi4-Z 2026 review)

We hit China to check out the Tank 400 Hi4-Z, the medium-to-large 4×4 SUV that could well challenge the likes of Ford Everest and Toyota LandCruiser Prado if it makes its way to Australia.

Slotting neatly between the Tank 300 and Tank 500 in size (of course), the ladder-frame Tank 400 has a more edgy design than the 300 and is offered in petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid in its Chinese homeland, and it’s the latter that’s most likely to lob Down Under.

The Tank 400 Hi4-Z PHEV fits a 2.0L turbo four paired with two electric motors and a 59kWh battery. It produces a whopping 635kW and 1195Nm combined, offers around 200 kilometres of electric range and has a touring range of 1128kms claimed.
