Lotus has announced that it will introduce a new hybrid V8-powered supercar in 2028 as it brings many new targets into play.

The Norfolk-based firm, owned by Chinese manufacturing giant Geely, has said that it has ‘evolved’ its business strategy in an effort to navigate ‘external headwinds’ as part of a new ‘Focus 2030’ schedule.

As part of this, it will adopt a ‘multi-powertrain strategy’, revising its previously electric-only business plan in favour of several engine options. Lotus says that it will develop pure combustion engines alongside plug-in hybrids and fully electric models. The brand adds that hybrid technology will play a ‘central role’ with its new X-Hybrid system debuting in the new Eletre X.

However, Lotus will return to supercars with the new Type 135, which is scheduled for launch in 2028. This model will get a V8 hybrid powertrain developing over 986bhp. The brand says that it is ‘expected to be manufactured in Europe’, which does suggest that plans to build the Type 135 overseas could still be considered. Further details of this model will be announced later this year, according to Lotus.

Qingfeng Feng, CEO, Lotus Group, said: “Lotus was born from the rebellious spirit of Colin Chapman, and that is not lost today. Focus 2030 will reset both the brand and the business to keep us true to our DNA. We are obsessed with engineering, obsessed with performance and obsessed with building drivers’ cars, and that is what will grow this business.”

Lotus will also continue to build its combustion-engined Emira with an updated version of this sports car set to be announced ‘in the coming weeks’. It’ll sit alongside existing Eletre, Emeya and Evija electric models in the Lotus range.
