HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics have treated multiple keiki for bicycle and e-bicycle-related injuries, sparking safety concerns for youth riders.

Two separate bicycle accidents happened during the afternoon hours of Friday, May 8.

Paramedics responded to an incident in Waianae around 2:10 p.m. to treat two boys, ages four and 13.

Officials said the boys were on one electric bicycle when they collided with a vehicle. Neither of the boys was wearing a helmet.

The four-year-old suffered multiple serious abrasion wounds and the 13-year-old was treated for a serious leg injury.

Friday’s second incident happened near the intersection of Kapolei Parkway and Manawai Street.

EMS said they treated a 12-year-old boy who lost control of his bike, hit the sidewalk and injured his head. He was also not wearing a helmet.

Paramedics treated him and brought him to an emergency room for further treatment, officials said.

Travis Counsell from the Hawaii Bicycling League said this is an important reminder for everyone on our roadways to look out for each other.

“Helmets are definitely key here. You hit a curb, bump or something, you want to have that helmet regardless,” he said. “If there’s a vehicle or somebody else involved, having it on is a really easy way to give yourself a little extra protection.”

“Helmets are a great safety feature and something we encourage broad use of since the legislative session just wrapped up.”

E-bike bill one step closer to becoming law

And with summer quickly approaching, Counsell said we’ll be seeing more keiki out and about — and now is the time for parents to teach their keiki where to ride and how to ride safely.

“For biking, be predictable. Ride in a place where you’re visible, ideally riding in the same direction as traffic,” he advised.

He also stressed the importance of using caution at intersections.

“Whether you’re a 10-year-old kid or a 50-year-old adult, we have all that extra responsibility to take that safety and make sure we’re predictable on our roadways. That we’re all getting where we need to go safely.”
