9 lucky winners to receive e-bikes

By AAA of Western and Central New York

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, a chance to highlight cycling as both a practical way to get around and a meaningful part of a healthy lifestyle. This year, AAA Western and Central New York is partnering with Bert’s Bikes & Fitness to promote safety for both cyclists and drivers.

With more riders on the road, education and awareness are vital to a safe ride. According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,166 bicyclists were killed in U.S. traffic crashes in 2023 – 61 more than in 2022. Most fatal crashes happen in urban areas, often between 6 and 9 p.m. The top contributing factor is failing to yield the right of way, followed by cyclists not being easily seen.

“Cycling offers tremendous benefits – it’s environmentally friendly, great for your health, and far more affordable than driving,” said Mike Formanowicz, manager of driver training at AAA Western and Central New York. “AAA is committed to educating drivers and encouraging cyclists to ride smart, stay alert, and always wear a helmet.”

“At Bert’s Bikes & Fitness, we equip cyclists with everything they need for an enjoyable ride, and we also want to ensure they have safety awareness before they pedal away,” said Jim Costello, sales director at Bert’s. “We’re pleased to partner with AAA on cycling education, valuable savings, and an exciting giveaway.”

As part of the partnership, AAA members receive valuable discounts on bikes and accessories. Bert’s is also awarding electric bike packages to nine lucky winners across Western and Central New York. Those interested in winning an e-bike must enter by May 15, which is Bike to Work Day. Entries can be placed here after agreeing to the terms and conditions.

Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, but many feel they aren’t given proper space or respect on the road. AAA and Bert’s have advice for both cyclists and drivers to share the road responsibly.

Tips for bicyclists

•Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, including riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals. Signal all turns.

•Wear a bicycle helmet every time and on every ride.

•Be visible by wearing bright colors during the day, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use lights at night.

•Remember that respect is a two-way street. Show motorists the same courtesy that you expect from them.

Tips for drivers

•Stay alert – avoid all distractions while driving.

•Yield to bicyclists when turning.

•Make a visual check for bicyclists by scanning mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic.

•Slow down and give at least 3 feet of clearance when passing.

•Never honk your horn at a bicyclist – it could cause them to swerve into traffic or go off the roadway and crash.
